10. Summary of the results of the thesis:
The thesis"Dystopian Elements in the Works of Murata Sayaka” focus on examining three representative works based on their original Japanese texts: the novellaSatsujin Shussan(殺人出産(2014), the novelShōmetsu Sekai(消滅世界(2015), and the short storySeimeishiki(生命式, 2019). The study aims to outline the landscape of the dystopian world and analyze Murata Sayaka's world-building artistry, thereby offering readers a comprehensive perspective on dystopia in her literary oeuvre. The primary findings achieved by the thesis include:
First, the thesis presents the historical development of the concept of dystopia, synthesizing the characteristics of dystopian literature and Japanese dystopian. On this basis, it establishes operational concepts and an analytical framework for subsequent chapters, while introducing Murata Sayaka's life and literary career and providing summaries of the three surveyed works.
Second, the thesis outlines the contours of Murata's dystopian world by examining four dimensions: the near-apocalyptic social setting, mechanisms of behavioral control, the alienation of formal institutions (law, education, administration), and the alienation of informal institutions (ethics, public opinion, implicit behavioral norms) across the three representative works. By integrating a comparative analysis with contemporary Japanese social reality, the thesis demonstrates that Murata's dystopian world functions as a magnifying mirror reflecting modern society.
Finally, from a poetic perspective, the thesis analyzes Murata's world-building artistry across three dimensions: space, language, and characterization. specifically, Murata's fictional universe embeds dystopia directly within contemporary urban life, employing familiar linguistic forms to designate the inhumane, and constructs a polarity between morality deficient characters and resistant characters. Through this, the thesis highlights the cautionary function of dystopian literature in Murata's creative work.
11. Practical applicability (if available):
The thesis can serve as a reference for research on and teaching of contemporary Japanese literature in Vietnam, particularly dystopian literature and the works of Murata Sayaka.
