In anticipation of the 6th Congress of the Party Committee of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) for the 2020-2025 term, Professor Vu Minh Giang, Chairman of the Science and Training Council and former Vice Director of VNU, shared the achievements of the VNU Party Committee during the 2015-2020 term, as well as his aspirations for the future development of VNU.

National Position and Responsibilities

During the past term, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has fulfilled the tasks set forth in the Resolution of the previous Congress, and even exceeded many targets. VNU has implemented many new policies to promote innovation in teaching and research, and creative innovation; participated in many major national science and technology (S&T) projects; and expanded cooperative relationships with many prestigious universities around the world.

Besides its developments and achievements as a leading educational institution in Vietnam, such as rising in the rankings of top universities in the world and the region, and increasing the number of publications in international journals, the outstanding highlights of Vietnam National University, Hanoi are its demonstration of national responsibility and its pivotal role in the country's education and training system.

QS Top 50 Under 50 2021: For the first time, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-Hanoi) is included in this ranking, placing it in the 101-150 group of top-performing young universities worldwide.

Entrusted by the Government for the first time to lead a key national science and technology program (Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the Northwest Region), Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has leveraged its strengths as a multidisciplinary university with a team of highly qualified scientists to successfully complete the task, earning high praise from leaders, ministries, agencies, and localities. This is a program with a high level of target-oriented and application-oriented approach. The decision to select a leading agency of sufficient caliber, with adequate capacity, human resources, time, experience, and a dedicated scientific team, was key to the program's success. To date, the results achieved have convincingly demonstrated this decision.

After 7 years of implementing the State-level Science and Technology Program "Science and Technology for Sustainable Development of the Northwest Region," 58 tasks have been approved and implemented, including 55 research projects and 3 pilot production projects. All 58 research projects and programs implemented under the Program have been conducted based on data collected through practical surveys and investigations, using diverse and modern methods, facilities, and approaches, tailored to the requirements of each task.

Looking at the results of the term and the Resolution of the 5th Party Congress of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the success of the Northwest Program is considered a highlight. The program's results have helped to fully identify the Northwest region, thereby providing comprehensive and effective development solutions, contributing to profound changes in the lives of the people.

Along with the Northwest Program, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) also undertakes other national tasks such as researching and compiling the National Gazetteer of Vietnam (National Gazetteer); and the Project on Translation and Promotion of the Quintessence of Eastern Classical Works (Eastern Classical Works Project). At the same time, VNU has encouraged and facilitated the active participation of scientists in the National Project to research and compile the history of Vietnam (National History), a large-scale project comprising 25 volumes of general history and 5 volumes of chronological events, 15 of which are edited by VNU staff. Furthermore, since 2019, VNU has begun implementing a project to build a Vietnam Studies Documentation Center of international stature. Once operational, along with the development of Vietnam Studies, the Center will make VNU an important global destination for research on Vietnam. This not only creates appeal and increases resources but also contributes to enhancing the nation's standing.

The establishment of the Tran Nhan Tong Institute is one of the highlights of the past term. This is a bold and innovative idea that helps elevate scientific understanding of Buddhism, viewing Buddhism from a scientific perspective. The Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has entrusted the Tran Nhan Tong Institute with the task of compiling, translating, and annotating these Eastern Buddhist scriptures.

On February 12, 2020, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam met with more than 70 scientists participating in five major scientific projects: Research and compilation of the History of Vietnam (abbreviated as National History); Encyclopedia; National Geographic of Vietnam (abbreviated as National Geographic); Digitalized Vietnamese knowledge system; Translation and promotion of the value of the finest works of Eastern classics.

On October 15, 2016, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) organized a conference to promote the activities of the Tran Nhan Tong Institute. This was the Institute's first activity since the Prime Minister issued the Decision to establish it on September 1, 2016, aiming to discuss the Institute's training and research activities, especially the initiation of a doctoral program in Buddhist studies, expected to begin in 2017.

During the past term, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has also pioneered in demonstrating national responsibility through advising on socio-economic development for localities. In addition, VNU scientists have participated in many activities, playing a pivotal role in the development of the country's science. Notable examples include reforming assessment and admission methods; participating in leading national education reform programs; and reforming teaching methods towards "individualized" learning, etc.

Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has promoted, built, and developed the Vietnam-Japan University, a pioneering model of educational cooperation and a bridge of friendship between Vietnam and Japan.

To continue developing Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) to new heights, a major policy is needed, implemented according to the motto "ONE VNU" – an organically interconnected entity among its member and affiliated units, thereby multiplying strength to create more breakthroughs in the process of development and integration. Talented and dedicated individuals committed to the development of VNU will be the key to successfully achieving the goals, mission, and vision of VNU.
