National Status and Responsibility

In the last term, VNU has fulfilled the tasks set out in the Resolution of the previous Congress, even exceeding many goals. VNU has had many new policies to promote innovative teaching and research activities, innovation; participated in many major national science and technology (S&T) tasks and expanded cooperative relations with many prestigious universities in the world.

In addition to the developments and achievements as a leading educational institution in Vietnam such as rising in the rankings of top universities in the world and the region, increasing the number of publications in international journals, the outstanding highlights of VNU are demonstrating national responsibility and the pivotal role in the country's education and training system.

QS Top 50 Under 50 2021: Hanoi National University is included in this ranking for the first time, with a position in the group of 101-150 young universities with top educational quality in the world.

For the first time, the Government has entrusted VNU to be the host agency of a key national science and technology program (Science and Technology for Sustainable Development of the Northwest Region), VNU has promoted the strength of a multidisciplinary, multi-field university with a team of highly qualified scientists to successfully complete the task, which has been highly appreciated by leaders, ministries, departments, branches and localities. This is a highly targeted and applicable program. The decision to choose a worthy host agency with sufficient capacity, human resources, time, experience and a dedicated scientific team is the key to the successful implementation of the Program. Up to this point, the results achieved have convincingly demonstrated that decision.

After 7 years of implementing the State-level Science and Technology Program “Science and Technology for Sustainable Development of the Northwest Region”, 58 tasks have been approved and implemented, including 55 topics and 03 pilot production projects. All 58 topics and projects implemented in the Program have been conducted based on the database of practical investigation and survey with rich, diverse and modern methods, facilities and approaches, suitable to the requirements of each task.

If we look at the results of the term and the Resolution of the 5th National University Party Congress, we can see that the success of the Northwest program is considered a bright spot. The results of the program have helped to fully identify the Northwest region, thereby providing comprehensive and effective development solutions, contributing to profoundly changing the lives of the people.

Along with the Northwest Program, VNU also undertakes other national tasks such as Research and compilation of the National Geographical Records of Vietnam (Quoc Chi); Project on Translation and Promotion of the Quintessence of Oriental Classics (Oriental Classics Project). At the same time, VNU has encouraged and created conditions for scientists to actively participate in the National Project on Research and Compilation of Vietnamese History (National History) with a scale of up to 25 volumes of general history and 5 volumes of chronicles, of which 15 volumes are edited by VNU staff. Not only that, since 2019, VNU has embarked on the Project to build an international-scale Vietnam Studies Documentation Center. When put into operation, along with the development of Vietnam Studies, the Center will make VNU an important address in the world for research on Vietnam. This not only creates attraction and increases resources but also contributes to enhancing national status.

The establishment of the Tran Nhan Tong Institute was one of the highlights of the last term. This is a bold and creative idea that helps raise scientific awareness of Buddhism, looking at Buddhism from a scientific perspective. VNU assigned the Tran Nhan Tong Institute to compile, translate and annotate these Eastern classics.

On February 12, 2020, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam met with more than 70 scientists participating in 5 major scientific projects: Research and Compilation of Vietnamese History (abbreviated as National History); Encyclopedia; National Geographic of Vietnam (abbreviated as National History); Digitalized Vietnamese Knowledge System; Translation and promotion of the quintessence of Eastern classics.

On October 15, 2016, VNU held a conference to promote the activities of the Tran Nhan Tong Institute. This is the first activity of the Institute since the Prime Minister issued the Decision on its establishment on September 1, 2016, to discuss the training and research activities of the Institute, especially the initiation of the doctoral training program in Buddhist studies, expected to start in 2017.

Also in the last term, VNU has pioneered in demonstrating national responsibility through consulting on socio-economic development for localities. In addition, VNU scientists have participated in many activities, promoting their pivotal role in the development of the country's science. Typical examples include innovating assessment and admission methods; participating in chairing national education innovation programs, innovating teaching methods towards "individualization", etc.

VNU has promoted, built and developed the Vietnam-Japan University, a pioneering educational cooperation model, a bridge of friendship between the two countries Vietnam and Japan.

To continue to develop VNU to new heights, it is necessary to have a great policy, implementing the slogan "ONE VNU" - an organically connected entity between member and affiliated units, thereby multiplying the strength to create more breakthroughs in the process of development and integration. Talented people, dedicated to the development of VNU will be the key to successfully implementing the goals, missions and visions of VNU.
