On February 1, 2023, the Cybermetrics Labs (under the Spanish National Research Council) announced the first ranking of 2023, according to which VNU increased 97 places compared to the results announced in August 2022, from 758 to 661 in the world, continuing to maintain the No. 1 position in Vietnam.
Webometrics is a ranking that evaluates the digital transformation capacity and international publication excellence on the Scopus and Google Scholar systems of higher education institutions worldwide.
The ranking criteria include:
- The Impact index (Level of influence) has a weight of 50%, measuring the spread of the website and digital resources of the higher education institution.
- The Excellence Index, weighted at 40%, measures the 10% most cited articles in 27 Scopus publishing fields.
- The Openness Index (Academic Openness) has a weight of 10%, measuring the number of citations of the top 310 authors of higher education institutions on the Google Scholar system.
Below are the rankings of higher education institutions in Vietnam as of January 2023:
In the January 2023 ranking, VNU continued to increase its ranking, up 97 places compared to the August 2022 ranking - in the top 700 in the world, 137th in Asia and 11th in Southeast Asia.

In this ranking, Webometrics still maintains the same ranking method as in August 2022. Specifically, the Visibility criterion has the highest weight (50%), followed by the Excellence criterion with a weight of 40% and the Transperency criterion with a weight of 10%. However, in this ranking, the Transperency criterion measures the number of citations of the top 310 authors of higher education institutions on the Google Scholar system instead of the top 210 authors as in previous rankings.

In this ranking, the remarkable increase in the Visibility criterion - from 656th in August 2022 to 431st in January 2023 - has shown an increase in the scope of influence of the online digital resource system and VNU website not only on the domestic and international academic community but also strongly impacting the whole society.
