Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) rose 97 places to 661st in the world in the January 2023 Webometrics ranking.

On February 1, 2023, Cybermetrics Labs (part of the Spanish National Research Council) announced the first ranking for 2023, according to which Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) rose 97 places compared to the results announced in August 2022, from 758 to 661 in the world, continuing to maintain its number 1 position in Vietnam.
Webometrics is a ranking system that assesses the digital transformation capabilities and international publication excellence of higher education institutions worldwide, based on Scopus and Google Scholar.
The ranking criteria include:
- The Impact Index, weighted at 50%, measures the reach and impact of the higher education institution's website and digital resources.
- The Excellence Index, with a weighting of 40%, measures the top 10% of cited papers across Scopus' 27 publishing fields.
- The Openness Index, with a weighting of 10%, measures the number of citations of the top 310 authors from higher education institutions on the Google Scholar system.
Below is the ranking of higher education institutions in Vietnam as of January 2023:
In the January 2023 ranking, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) continued to improve its ranking, rising 97 places compared to the August 2022 ranking – placing it in the top 700 worldwide, 137th in Asia, and 11th in Southeast Asia.

In this ranking period, Webometrics maintains the same ranking methodology as in the August 2022 ranking. Specifically, the Visibility criterion has the highest weight (50%), followed by the Excellence criterion with a weight of 40% and the Transparency criterion with a weight of 10%. However, in this ranking, the Transparency criterion measures the number of citations of the top 310 authors from higher education institutions on the Google Scholar system instead of the top 210 authors as in previous rankings.

In this ranking period, the significant increase in the Visibility criterion – from rank 656 in August 2022 to rank 431 in January 2023 – demonstrates the growing influence of VNU's online digital resources and website not only on the domestic and international academic community but also on society as a whole.

In 2022, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) won the Recognition of Improvement award from the QS World University Rankings organization for its significant improvement in ranking results based on an improvement in average ranking. This was the first time a Vietnamese higher education institution received this award.
Regarding the 2022 ranking results, QS has announced the results of the QS World University Rankings 2023 (QS WUR 2023). For the fifth consecutive year, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has been ranked among the top 1,000 universities in the world according to the QS WUR criteria. For the QS WUR 2023 ranking criteria, VNU continues to demonstrate its prestige in academic and employability. According to QS, VNU is ranked 162nd in Asia, belonging to the top 21.3% of universities in Asia, and 36th in Southeast Asia. In the 6 fields ranked by QS in the QS WUR BY SUBJECT 2022 (including: Computer Science & Information Systems in the 501-550 group, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace & Manufacturing in the 451-500 group, Mathematics in the 351-400 group, Physics & Astronomy in the 451-500 group, Business & Management Science in the 451-500 group, and Electrical & Electronics Engineering in the 451-500 group), Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has 5 fields in the top 500 worldwide. Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy, and Business & Management Science are all ranked number 1 in Vietnam. Electrical & Electronics Engineering is included in the QS rankings for the first time.
According to the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) continues to maintain its ranking in four fields from the previous ranking: Computer Science, Social Sciences (both in the 601-800 group); Engineering, Natural Sciences (both in the 801-1000 group). In the 2022 ranking, VNU added two new fields to its ranking: Business & Economics and Life Sciences (both in the 501-600 group).
Most recently, the US News & World Report magazine published the results of its ranking of the best global universities. According to the ranking, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) is ranked 970th in the world and 258th in Asia. Notably, in the 13 ranking criteria of US News & World Report, the total number of publications showed a significant increase in VNU's ranking, rising 59 places compared to the 2022 ranking. Also in this ranking, VNU's Engineering field was ranked for the first time at 636th, while its Physics field continued to be ranked at 664th in the world.
