As of 2013, although there are many professional History training and research units in Vietnam, there is no scientific center with a department or specialized training direction for Urban History. Meanwhile, Urban History has always been one of the strong training departments and majors at many historical training and research units in the world, from North America (The Urban History Association) to Northern Europe (The Danish Centre for Urban History; Institute of Urban History, Stockholm...), Western Europe (Centre for Urban History at Leicester - University of Leicester; Institut für Europäische Urbanistik (IfEU), Uni Weimar; Institut für Städtebau und Wohnungswesen, München, European Assiciation for Urban History (European Union), the United States (Urban History from the University of Chicago); East Asia (The Center for Urban History, Tokyo)... Besides, Urban History has also become an important research field of historical science with a series of prestigious scientific journals published at many universities and research centers around the world.
In general, the research and training direction of Urban History has been popular in the world and the region, but is still very new in Vietnam. Meanwhile, the research field on rural - agricultural - peasant in Vietnamese history has affirmed the professional prestige of the Faculty of History. Along with the development of the times, the trend of expansion of Vietnamese urban areas (and to some extent the trend of "urbanization") has been and is taking place strongly. Therefore, studying the process of Urban History in Vietnam in the context of the region and the world will contribute to supplementing and perfecting current historical issues in our country.
