VNU-USSH signed a cooperation document with the Institute of Contemporary China and Asia, Russian Academy of Sciences

On October 16, 2024, Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong, Vice President of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH) had a meeting with the delegation of the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia, Russian Academy of Sciences led by Professor, Dr. Babaev Kirill, Director, to visit and sign a cooperation agreement with the University.

Also attending were Dr. Vu Thuy Trang, Institute of European Studies, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences; representatives of leaders of some training units and functional departments of the University: Faculty of Political Science, Philosophy, Department of Cooperation and Development, and Scientific Research Management.

On behalf of the School Board, Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong warmly welcomed the delegation of the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia of the Russian Academy of Sciences to visit and work with the School, and affirmed: Vietnam and the Russian Federation have a long-standing friendly relationship, raising the level of strategic partnership. 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on the basic principles of friendly relations between Vietnam and the Russian Federation (1994-2024). Russia and Vietnam have bilateral cooperation in various fields, of which education and training is a priority area of ​​cooperation. Currently, there are more than 100 cooperation agreements between universities and research institutes of Vietnam and the Russian Federation. In that spirit, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, as a leading unit in training and research in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities, has signed many bilateral cooperation documents with many leading universities in Russia: Higher School of Economics, Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, ASEAN Center, Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Russian Federation, Moscow State Linguistic University.

With the strategy of internationalizing the training program along with its strengths and achievements, VNU-USSH wishes to expand cooperation with research institutes and universities in the Russian Federation in human resource training, scientific research, innovation, serving the socio-economic and cultural development of each country as well as contributing to solving global and regional problems.

The University leaders highly appreciate the effective cooperation and support of the Institute of Contemporary China and Asia for lecturers and researchers at the Faculty of Political Science in recent years and hope that in the coming time, the relationship between the Institute and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities will be more open.

For the Russian Academy of Sciences in general and the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU is a reliable partner and is always the top priority when we look for partners to implement training and research activities in Vietnam. In recent times, the University's researchers have effectively participated in scientific conferences and published internationally in prestigious Russian journals with many works of high scientific value.

Professor Babaev Kirill shared a lot of information about the research direction that the Institute of Contemporary China and Asia is interested in and opportunities to promote cooperation between the two units.

Professor Babaev Kirill added: “The Center for Vietnam and ASEAN Studies under the Institute of Contemporary China and Asia is a large center and gathers many leading Vietnamese scholars in Russia. Therefore, in the coming time, we really want to further promote scholar exchange activities, coordinate the organization of research projects, and international conferences with the participation of Vietnamese and Russian scientists to see diverse and new perspectives on regional and global issues.”

On behalf of the leaders, staff and lecturers of the Faculty of Political Science, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Chieu (Dean of the Faculty) expressed his deep gratitude to the Director, Professor Babaev Kirill, and Professor Mazyrin Vladimir for their connection and valuable support to the Faculty's lecturers in improving their professional qualifications and international publications in the past time. With the strength of being the first unit in Vietnam to provide in-depth training in Political Science from undergraduate to doctoral level, the Faculty of Political Science has received the trust and assignment from the School's Board of Directors, and will be ready to be the focal point for developing specific cooperation plans with the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia, the Russian Academy of Sciences in the coming time.

Recalling the impressions and memories of directly attending the international conference in Russia in 2019, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Anh Cuong (Deputy Head of the Faculty of Political Science) shared: “During the 2019 business trip, we were very touched by the support and affection that Professor, Dr. Mazyrin Vladimir as well as Russian scholars gave to Vietnamese friends. Thanks to that enthusiastic support, I was able to publish an article in the Institute's prestigious journal.”

Regarding cooperation in research and international publication, Prof. Dr. Mazyrin Vladimir, Director of the Center for Vietnamese and ASEAN Studies, added: “Our journal is considered one of the most prestigious journals in Russia and is listed in the Web of Science. Therefore, we welcome and welcome scientists from VNU-USSH to submit their research articles, and will also encourage Russian scholars to submit articles to your journal of Social Sciences and Humanities. We propose to organize the publication of a special issue of the Journal of Vietnamese Studies in October 2025, marking one year of the official signing of the cooperation agreement between the two units, and at the same time celebrating the important event of the 80th anniversary of the tradition of VNU-USSH”.

Vice President Dang Thi Thu Huong sincerely thanked and highly appreciated the idea of ​​both sides working together to publish a special issue of the Vietnam Studies Journal in October 2025, which includes about 10 articles by Vietnamese and Russian scholars on a number of topics: history, culture, politics, economics of Vietnam, etc. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is committed to mobilizing and connecting leading scientists in various fields to ensure the highest quality articles, in accordance with the standards required by the Journal.

After open and friendly discussions, the two sides agreed on a number of key cooperation contents:

- Exchange of research scholars and students (both undergraduate and postgraduate levels)
- Support and promote teaching activities on topics, scientific presentations, and participate in training activities.
- Organizing international scientific conferences in Russia and in Vietnam
- Exchange of information, documents, research results; support for international publication and publication
Specifically, in 2025, VNU-USSH will coordinate with the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia, the Russian Academy of Sciences to organize the 2025 International Scientific Conference with the theme: "Vietnam - Russia relations in the context of ASEAN and the Eastward policy". After the conference, the international conference proceedings/monographs with ISBN codes will be published at a prestigious publishing house in the top 200-500 in the world in the Russian Federation. The School's Board of Directors assigned the Faculty of Political Science to be the focal point for content, and the functional departments will coordinate to ensure that the preparation work is thorough, effective and in accordance with regulations.
At the end of the working session, representatives of the leaders of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Institute of Contemporary China and Asia, Russian Academy of Sciences officially signed a cooperation document (MOU) as the legal basis for the cooperation contents between the two sides.

Previously, within the framework of the visit and work at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the delegation of the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia had a friendly meeting with the leaders and lecturers of the Faculty of Political Science.
