This morning, November 20, 2023, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, solemnly held a rally to celebrate Vietnamese Teachers' Day, with the participation of many generations of leaders, scientists, lecturers, staff of the university and partner organizations.
The Editorial Board of the VNU-USSH online portal respectfully presents to you, esteemed faculty members, the congratulatory speech by Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Secretary of the Party Committee and Rector of the university, delivered at the ceremony.
Dear former faculty members, professors, scientists, lecturers, and staff of the University,
Today, amidst the beautiful autumn atmosphere of Hanoi, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities joyfully celebrates Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20, 2023. On behalf of the Party Committee and the Board of Directors, I would like to express my profound respect and remembrance to the deceased staff and faculty members; my sincere gratitude to all generations of teachers who have worked and are currently working at the University; and my best wishes for health, happiness, and success to all lecturers, staff, employees, and distinguished guests!
Ladies and gentlemen!
During the opening ceremony at the end of September, I spoke about the goals, the figures, the long-term and broad perspectives, and the need for creative and innovative change to keep pace with the rapidly changing higher education system... On this Vietnamese Teachers' Day, I would like to refrain from repeating the quantitative figures and planned issues, as they have already been agreed upon, are being implemented, and will yield results… Instead, allow me to share with you, teachers and esteemed guests, a few simple things, my own reflections and aspirations, my heartfelt personal narrative. And, I will tentatively call it "Humanistic Emotional Intelligence" or perhaps "Humanistic Empathy."
1. Humanism is wisdom:This has been confirmed. The 28-year journey of the School's construction and development, built upon the foundation of the Faculty of Literature Tradition (1945) - the Quintessence of General Studies (1956), has shaped the image of the Humanities School today: still academic but fully integrated, neither academically fragmented nor out of place in the contemporary digital university landscape. 28 years is sufficient to demonstrate the Humanistic Intelligence.
Less than a month ago, the QS World University Ranking by Subjects ranked the social sciences field of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) in the top 501-600 worldwide. This is a simple yet proud testament to the position and reputation of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities on the national and international university map!
Thank you to all generations of teachers, staff, and students who have contributed to the current standing of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities! Congratulations to the University and to all of us!
2. Humanism is about empathy!Empathy blends intelligence and humanity. We are moved to hear more and more staff members share that in the humanities, there is increasing empathy, gentleness, and naturalness to the point where one can feel "Compassion is close at hand - intelligence is easily accessible"!
We believe in that, and we hope it will spread even more strongly throughout this Faculty of Humanities!
Sometimes, when browsing through the Facebook pages of teachers and students, we sense "simple yet profound emotional moments." Just the other day, I read a status update from a teacher about the uniform ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) made of "brocade fabric with the USSH logo subtly woven" that the University's Trade Union designed for female staff. The status, though only 23 words long, was overflowing with emotion…!
Reading my colleague's status update, I looked at the "USSH Hanoi" logo embroidered on the chest of my shirt and suddenly felt the collar fit better, the fabric softer, and the shirt more elegant! The words "Proud and loving the Faculty of Humanities" that my teacher publicly expressed on Facebook made me appreciate even more the shirt with the "USSH Hanoi" logo that I'm wearing – just like the joyful, compassionate teachers and female staff members of the University are spreading!
And just two weeks ago, on the Confessions page, a student posted a status about a beautiful moment created by a young female staff member of the university, who gave her high heels to a female student receiving her bachelor's degree for a graduation photo! The phrase, "What size do you wear? Can you wear my shoes for now?" stirred intellectual emotions in thousands of students; and the image of the young female staff member "continuing to work barefoot" will remain the most beautiful and touching image of the university's humanities students for many years to come.
The image of a female teacher wearing an ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) and a female staff member offering her high heels to a student for a photo are just two of the dozens—hundreds—of noble gestures we hear and see daily at the Faculty of Humanities. There are many more beautiful words and good deeds from staff members in a scientific and humane environment like the Faculty of Humanities that I, or any of us, cannot possibly list in a single speech: the lecturers are constantly updating their lectures and innovating teaching methods to improve the quality of their teaching; the administrative staff are continuously striving to improve processes and apply technology to ensure their work is carried out in the spirit of "Professionalism - Friendliness - Efficiency."
On behalf of the school's leadership team, we would like to thank all teachers, staff, and employees for their contributions, efforts, dedication, and dedication to building a humane school that is both intellectually stimulating and compassionate!
3. Life is constantly changing, and higher education is changing every day.
I hope that every staff member and employee of the University will strive to harmonize updating professional knowledge with cultivating empathy. Empathy is an innate ability that can be enhanced through experience and positive thinking: from Cognitive Empathy (we share daily tasks) to Emotional Empathy (we work with empathy and sharing) to Compassionate Empathy (we add actions and help). By doing so, the University of Humanities will become even "newer," "different," and "better"; the overall legacy of the University of Humanities will shine even brighter and more glorious!
I also hope that senior leaders and close partners of the University (visiting professors, philanthropists, etc.) will continue to provide both moral and material support so that the University can continue to innovate and develop in the spirit of science, national identity, and integration!
Wishing good health, happiness, and success to all teachers, staff, and partners on Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20th!
Thank you very much!
