Presentation “Climate and Environment of Vietnam in the 17th-19th Centuries: History, Documentation, and Approaches”

On September 30, 2019, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), in collaboration with the French National Institute for Sustainable Development Research (IRD) and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CASE) in Paris (France), successfully organized the first seminar in a series of thematic seminars on the Environmental History of Vietnam.

Presentation “Climate and Environment of Vietnam in the 17th-19th Centuries: History, Documentation, and Approaches”

The seminar aims to create a space for academic exchange among lecturers, researchers, graduate students, and undergraduates from Vietnam and abroad on the history of the environment, the impact of the environment on life and culture, and the transformation of urban areas under the influence of the environment... in the modern and contemporary historical periods of Vietnam.

The seminar attracted nearly 40 lecturers, researchers, and postgraduate students from Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the French National Institute for Sustainable Development Research (IRD), the Institute of History, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, the Institute of Archaeology, Hanoi Pedagogical University, etc. The two main speakers were Assoc. Prof. Hoang Anh Tuan (Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) and Prof. Emmanuel Poisson (Denis Diderot University, Paris, France).

Associate Professor Hoang Anh Tuan's research focuses on exploring several aspects of "Sources, themes, and challenges in the study of pre-modern environmental history in Vietnam." Meanwhile, Professor Emmanuel Poisson delves into analyzing "Some Perspectives and Understandings on the Environment in Modern Vietnam."

The seminar concluded with numerous questions, comments, and research suggestions from researchers both domestically and internationally, promising a bright future for further research. A second seminar is scheduled for December 2019.
