"The Book of Life"

Wednesday - May 4, 2016 11:05 AM
The University of Social Sciences and Humanities – Vietnam National University, Hanoi, has gone through a 20-year journey of formation, development, and inheritance of the achievements of 60 years of Hanoi University and 70 years of tradition of the Faculty of Literature in Vietnam. Looking back at each stage of the University's development, it is easy to recognize the significant contributions of veteran staff in each specific management position and professional work. Returning from many battlefields and different military units, the University's veteran staff have, over the years, preserved and promoted the valuable qualities of a revolutionary soldier, a soldier of Uncle Ho.

"The Book of Life"

Many veteran staff members in the school have been silently and continuously contributing to the cause of education and training, serving as exemplary and beloved scientists, administrators, and teachers. The titles of "Outstanding Teacher," "People's Teacher," and the academic ranks, positions, and degrees bestowed upon veteran staff members partly acknowledge the heroic achievements of these "soldiers of Uncle Ho" on this new front.

The Veterans Association of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was established on December 22, 2001. Over the past 15 years, the Association has been recognized by the Hanoi City Veterans Association and the Vietnam Veterans Association as one of the exemplary veterans associations among university veterans associations nationwide. The numerous badges, commemorative medals, certificates of merit, and commendations awarded to individuals and groups by the Hanoi City Veterans Association over the years further affirm this recognition.

The total number of members of the Veterans Association of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities is decreasing year by year. This reduction in membership is easily explained and is a welcome sign, as it aligns with the history of "national peace and prosperity." To promptly preserve the stories of the battlefield and the faces of the soldiers on the front lines of education and training in social sciences and humanities, the Party Committee and the Board of Directors of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities have encouraged and assisted the University's Veterans Association in publishing this commemorative book under the title:A page in the book of life.

Pages of LifeFirst, there's the internal communication handbook, which serves to connect veteran members at the school, including biographical information, achievements, accomplishments, and portraits. Secondly,Pages of LifeIt is also a place to share battlefield memories, military anecdotes, and stories of professional joys and sorrows, as well as personal happiness… The book is a publication of a collective of authors, including veterans currently working at the School. However, to enhance the tradition of the Association and create a bond of camaraderie, the editorial board made an effort to gather materials and contact and meet with some former veterans belonging to the School's Association of Retired Teachers. The editorial board's enthusiastic organization of the manuscript has enriched the book with many pages of personal anecdotes. Nevertheless,Pages of LifeThis book does not include the full biographies of all current members because some members have requested it. The editorial board and the executive board respect the humility and privacy of the members' personal information. This book is compiled on a voluntary basis.

Just like the two volumesRemaining with timeFollowing previous publications, the editorial board continues to honor the Hero of the Armed Forces – Martyr Chu Cam Phong (Tran Tien), Hero of the Armed Forces, Martyr Le Anh Xuan (Ca Le Hien), along with 26 other martyrs, who were lecturers and students from Hanoi University, bravely sacrificed their lives on the battlefields – immortal at the age of 20. The list of 28 martyrs is certainly not the final, accurate list; the names and biographies of these martyrs still remain a debt of gratitude to each of us, needing verification and confirmation. Nevertheless, the list of martyrs and the hastily written poems and essays of these heroes still resonate today as historical accounts and as moral lessons for each of us readers.

This book was published to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the University's Veterans Association. The Veterans Association hopes that the book will be preserved in the University's historical archives in the future as a historical record.Miscellaneous Military TreatisesAnd first and foremost, in the memories of my teammates and colleagues at this beloved University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

We sincerely hope for your understanding and forgiveness for any shortcomings and unsuccessful efforts of the Editorial Board. The Veterans Association would like to express our gratitude for the attention and assistance of the University leadership and the Hanoi National University Publishing House, and we respectfully introduce this book.
