Department of Japanese Studies promotes cooperation with leading European universities

From August 27 to September 3, 2017, representatives of the Department of Japanese Studies, Faculty of Oriental Studies made a working trip to France and Portugal to initially promote cooperation in research and teaching Japanese studies with training units and research organizations in Europe. This is a new direction of the Department of Japanese Studies after more than 20 years of establishment and development and is supported and sponsored by the Toshiba International Exchange Fund (TIFO).

Within the framework of cooperation and introduction of TIFO Fund, the delegation of Japanese Department led by Associate Professor Dr. Phan Hai Linh (Head of Department) visited and worked at the National Library of France and Aix Marseille University (France), met with Professor Guy Faure (Director of the Institute of Asian Studies, Aix Marseille University). Here, the two sides discussed the possibilities of cooperation related to Japanese studies.

Meeting with the Executive Board of the European Association for Japanese Studies (EAJS): Prof. Andrej Bekes- University of Ljubljana (President of EAJS), Prof. Bjarke Frellesvig (University of Oxford, Former President of EAJS), Prof. Verena Blechinger-Talcott (Free University Berlin), Dr. Laura Moretti (University of Cambridge).​​​​

Next, the delegation attended the conference on Japanese Studies in Europe organized by the European Association for Japanese Studies (EAJS) in Lisbon, Portugal. During the conference as well as other side events, the delegation had the opportunity to meet and work with leaders and researchers from leading universities in Japanese studies in Europe and America such as Cambridge University, Oxford University, Ljubljana University, Berlin University, etc. Based on the introduction of the training and research achievements of the Department of Japanese Studies, the partners also proposed feasible cooperation plans in the future.

The trip opened up opportunities for cooperation in Japanese studies research between the two sides. The TIFO Foundation also expressed its intention to continue supporting the Department of Japanese Studies to further promote the cooperation process to a new level in the coming years.
