On March 29, 2018, Mr. Anar Imanov (Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Vietnam) visited the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and inaugurated a photo exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the National Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Welcoming the Ambassador, Professor Pham Quang Minh (Rector of the University) expressed his joy and honor in supporting the Azerbaijani Embassy in organizing the photo exhibition at the University. This is an opportunity for students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities to broaden their understanding of the history and culture of a beautiful country located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and West Asia. It is also an opportunity for the Embassy and the University to promote cooperation between the two sides.

Professor Pham Quang Minh delivered a welcoming speech to Mr. Anar Imanov (Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Vietnam) and inaugurated the photo exhibition on the country and people of Azerbaijan, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the country's National Day (1918-2018).

In the upcoming academic year, with the support of the Azerbaijani Embassy, the school will invite lecturers to teach Azerbaijani language to students. In addition, there will be opportunities for master's and doctoral scholarships for Vietnamese students in Azerbaijan. To foster cooperation, the school will also provide scholarships for Azerbaijani students to study Vietnamese.

Following the opening ceremony of the photo exhibition, the Azerbaijani Ambassador had a talk with students from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities focusing on two main topics: the history, culture, and socio-economic aspects of Azerbaijan, and the history of Vietnam-Azerbaijan cooperation.

The Rector announced that a lecturer teaching Azerbaijani will be coming to teach students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in the next academic year.

In 1918, the Republic of Azerbaijan was established, but this state only existed until 1920. In 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan regained its independence. Today, the Republic of Azerbaijan is a Caucasus country in Eurasia. Located at the crossroads between Eastern Europe and Western Asia, it borders the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south. It covers an area of 86,600 km² and has a population of over 9 million. The official language of Azerbaijan is Azerbaijani, spoken by approximately 95% of the population. The Azerbaijani economy is primarily based on industry: machine manufacturing, oil and other mining industries, oil refining, textiles, and chemical processing. The first European Games were held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 2015, with the participation of 6,000 athletes representing 50 European countries.

The photo exhibition was held in the lobby of building E.

Speaking about the relationship between Vietnam and Azerbaijan, the Ambassador said that despite the geographical distance and different political, economic, and social conditions, the two countries have a long-standing tradition of friendship and cooperation, and the people of both countries always consider each other close friends. In 1959, President Ho Chi Minh visited Azerbaijan. In 1983, the leader of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, visited Vietnam when he was still one of the leaders of the Soviet Union. In 2014, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan visited Vietnam, and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Truong Tan Sang visited Azerbaijan.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Vietnam was one of the first countries to recognize Azerbaijan (1991), and the two countries officially established diplomatic relations shortly thereafter (1992). The Azerbaijani Embassy in Vietnam was established in 2013. Historically, Azerbaijani experts have made significant contributions to the formation and development of Vietnam's oil and gas industry. In the near future, the Azerbaijan-Vietnam Intergovernmental Commission will become operational, creating a strong impetus for the development of bilateral relations between the two countries, promoting the implementation of high-level agreements, and striving to increase bilateral trade to US$1 billion.

Ambassador Anar Imanov spoke with students from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, introducing them to the history and people of Azerbaijan. The Ambassador also affirmed the long-standing and close relationship between the two countries.

During the war, thousands of Vietnamese people studied in Azerbaijan and later returned, holding various positions in the Party, government, and national economy, making significant contributions to Vietnam's construction and development. They served as a bridge for friendly and cultural exchange, connecting the people of Vietnam and Azerbaijan through the Center for Azerbaijani History and Culture Studies of the Institute of Policy, Law and Management under the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations and the Vietnam-Azerbaijan Friendship Association.

Mr. Tamerlan Khalilov expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome from the students and the university, and hoped that in the near future, more Vietnamese students would come to study and learn about Azerbaijan.
