Peer Quality Assessment of Anthropology Training Program

On December 21 and 22, 2017, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities welcomed a delegation of experts from the Institute for Education Quality Assurance, VNU, to assess the quality of the undergraduate training program in Anthropology. This is the fourth training program to be assessed in 2017 by the University.

The expert delegation includes: Dr. Tran Thi Hoai (Deputy Director of the Institute for Educational Quality Assurance, VNU, head of the delegation), Associate Professor Dr. Dang Hoai Thu (Head of the Faculty of Cultural Studies, University of Culture, member), Dr. Mai Thi Quynh Lan (Institute for Educational Quality Assurance, VNU, secretary).

The Opening Ceremony of the evaluation program was chaired by Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hoa (Vice Principal of the School). On the side of the Faculty of Anthropology, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Suu (Head of the Faculty) and all lecturers in the Faculty attended. The School's Center for Education Quality Assurance was in charge of the organization, together with the leaders of functional departments and centers in the School accompanying throughout the evaluation process.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hoa (Vice Principal of the School) is in charge of ensuring educational quality.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hoa said at the opening ceremony: “Anthropology is a traditional major of the University and up to now, it has had a team of high-quality and prestigious teaching staff, along with many outstanding scientific works. However, this major is currently facing many difficulties and challenges. This training program evaluation will help the Faculty of Anthropology and the University overcome the limitations and promote the strengths of the training program, thereby helping this major to develop further.”

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hoa also expressed her gratitude to the expert team for performing their duties seriously, impartially and effectively in the process of evaluating the University's training programs in recent times.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Suu, Head of Department of Anthropology

Representing the Faculty of Anthropology, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Suu (Head of the Faculty) gave an overview of the development process of the Faculty of Anthropology. The Faculty of Anthropology was established from the Ethnology Department of the Faculty of History in 1960. In 2010, the unit became the Department of Anthropology under the University and in 2015, the Faculty of Anthropology was established. After more than half a century of development, the Faculty of Anthropology is now the only higher education institution in Vietnam that systematically trains Anthropology from undergraduate to master's and doctoral levels. Currently, the Faculty has 4 Associate Professors, 5 PhDs, 4 PhD students, most of whom were trained abroad. Scientific research, publication and international cooperation are the strengths of the Faculty. Through adjustments to improve quality, the Anthropology training program focuses on combining the tradition and identity of the Faculty with updating new trends in training from prestigious universities around the world.

Dr. Lam Minh Chau, Deputy Head of Department of Anthropology

Dr. Lam Minh Chau (Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Anthropology) presented the self-assessment report of the training program, focusing on the strengths and weaknesses that the Faculty has identified. These comments are drawn from three bases. Firstly, the training unit has identified the objectives, philosophy, and output standards of the training process and all of them have been appropriately specified in the program structure and description of the training program. Secondly, how are the teaching and assessment methods, and to what extent are the output products capable of meeting social requirements? Thirdly, the unit's resources to complete the set goals...

The evaluation activities of the expert team include: studying supporting documents, interviewing the School Board of Directors, leaders of functional departments and centers, interviewing the Faculty Board and Heads of Departments, interviewing lecturers, student support departments, interviewing students, alumni, surveying training facilities, etc.
