Professor Nguyen Van Khanh: "Nurture your ambitions and dreams for a better future!"

That was the message from Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh (Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities) to the students at the Opening Ceremony of the 2014-2015 academic year, which took place this morning, September 12, 2014. The Rector struck the traditional drum, signaling the start of a new academic year.

Before a large audience of faculty, students, and trainees from the entire university, Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh delivered a speech reviewing the outstanding achievements that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities had attained in the past academic year.

In the field of training, the University has completed the planning project for training majors and specializations for the period 2014-2020; the percentage of students with good and excellent academic performance in the non-specialized training programs reached 47.5%, and in the high-quality training programs reached 63%; the enrollment scale for doctoral training has more than doubled; two new postgraduate training programs have been introduced: PhD in International Relations and PhD in Anthropology, bringing the total number of postgraduate training programs at the University to 59.

Regarding scientific research, the University has been leading the implementation of 14 national-level projects, 17 projects funded by the National Science and Technology Development Fund, 14 projects at the Vietnam National University, Hanoi level, and 4 projects at the city level. The entire university has published over 600 scientific articles and organized 28 conferences and seminars, including 19 international conferences and seminars. The University completed the project on assessing Vietnamese language proficiency for foreigners, which has been highly praised by the scientific community.

The faculty has improved in quality, with 17 more faculty members successfully defending their doctoral dissertations and 8 lecturers being appointed to the titles of Professor and Associate Professor. The number of lecturers with postgraduate qualifications now accounts for over 90%, including 184 PhDs and 90 Professors and Associate Professors.

Regarding international cooperation, the University signed 20 additional cooperation agreements with reputable partners, bringing the total number of international partners to 200.

Assigning tasks for the new academic year, the Rector emphasized that faculty and students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities need to focus all efforts on promoting the implementation of Central Resolution No. 6 on the development of science and technology and Central Resolution No. 8 on fundamental and comprehensive reform of education and training. The new academic year is also linked to many important events of the country and of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, including the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Literature and the 20th anniversary of the founding of the University. In this context, some key tasks of the University have been identified as:

- Continue to innovate the content and methods of teaching, and apply all the positive elements of credit-based training to improve the quality of training;

- Successfully complete existing state-level projects, implement solutions to enhance international publications, and build strong research groups;

- Continue to rapidly develop a team of qualified personnel.

To the new students of the QH-2014-X cohort, the Rector Professor extended his warmest regards and welcomed them to the student community of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities:The school and teachers hope that you will soon stabilize your mindset, correctly identify your motivation for learning, and continuously nurture your ambitions and dreams to train, strive, and study well for your future careers. You have the responsibility to preserve, cultivate, and further enhance the fine traditions of a leading university in the country.”

Also at the opening ceremony, the school awarded prizes to 9 top-scoring students in the 2014 entrance exam; 63 students with excellent academic results, 59 students with outstanding achievements in staff work, and 51 students who overcame difficulties to excel in their studies during the 2013-2014 academic year.
