The Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU, Hanoi decided to award a scholarship to female student Tran Thi Hong Ngoc.

Previously, Dan Tri newspaper published an article about the difficult situation of Tran Thi Hong Ngoc (born in 2001, residing in Hamlet 7, Nghi Tien Commune, Nghi Loc District, Nghe An, former student of class 12C1, Nghi Loc 4 High School). Ngoc had a university entrance exam score of 26.5 points in block C, and was admitted to the Faculty of Journalism, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU in the 2019 admission season. She lives with her disabled mother, who is no longer able to work, and has a serious illness (late stage thyroid cancer), and her finances are extremely difficult. Although she passed the university entrance exam with a high score, she is at risk of having to stop before university, which means facing an uncertain future.

It is known that Hong Ngoc is a filial, hard-working, studious girl with a strong will to excel. For many years, she has been an excellent student, loved by teachers and is an example to her friends for her determination to excel in studying and life. Ngoc once sadly shared with a reporter from Dan Tri newspaper: "I know my mother has worked very hard, she has all her hopes on me so I always try my best to study well to not let her down. My mother always says that there are only two of us in the family so we have to work hard together, I have to study to get a job so that I can escape poverty in the future..But now my mother has a serious illness and needs a lot of money for treatment every month, so I will have to find a job to help her get treatment. If my mother is no longer here, my life will have no meaning.".

The decision to award the scholarship by the Principal is to show timely sympathy and encouragement for Hong Ngoc's particularly difficult circumstances, with the desire to help her have the opportunity to go to university, acquire knowledge in the major she has many dreams of, and have the opportunity to rise up and change her fate. Along with the above scholarship, Hong Ngoc is also supported by the School with free accommodation during her university studies and given priority consideration for scholarships for poor students who overcome difficulties according to regulations.

Sharing about this decision, Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh said: I am touched by Hong Ngoc's will and determination and realize that she is a young person with potential. The school will be very sad if the hardships and harshness of life directly take away the dreams and future of such a young person. If she has chosen the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU with such love and effort, we also wish to contribute to reducing the difficulties that life poses for her, so that she can go all the way to her dream on the path of education. I hope she will accept this gift, this affection of the school to create momentum for a better future, bringing happiness to herself and her mother. The school will be happy to welcome her as a new student of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities on the upcoming admission day.

Dr. Nguyen Anh Thu (Head of Development Cooperation Department, VNU) also confirmed that she will support Tran Thi Hong Ngoc with a bicycle as a means of transportation to school every day and 2 million VND per month for living expenses in the first year of university.

This afternoon (August 21, 2019), Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Quang Lieu (Head of Student Affairs Department, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU) will personally go to Ngoc's hometown in Nghe An to announce the decision of the School Principal and pick her up to enroll in Hanoi.
