Celebrating 43 years of tradition and 20 years of establishment of the Faculty of Information and Library: 20 years of youth and ambition to reach far

On the morning of November 11, 2016, the Faculty of Information and Library, University of Social Sciences and Humanities solemnly held a ceremony to celebrate its 43rd anniversary and 20th anniversary. Attending the ceremony were Dr. Vu Duong Thuy Nga - Director of the Library Department, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dung, Deputy Director of the National Library of Vietnam, Mr. Pham The Khang - Chairman of the Vietnam Library Association, Dr. Nghiem Xuan Huy, Deputy Head of the Department of Science and Technology, VNU, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Son - Director of the Information and Library Center of VNU. On the side of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, attending the ceremony were Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim, Secretary of the Party Committee, Vice Rector of the University; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan, Vice Rector of the University, Prof. Dr., People's Teacher Nguyen Van Khanh, Former Secretary of the Party Committee, Former Rector of the University, currently Chairman of the University's Scientific Council. The solemn ceremony was also attended by many generations of leaders and lecturers of the Faculty of History (the unit that established the Library Group, the predecessor of the Faculty of Information and Library today), leaders and lecturers of the Faculty of Information and Library through the periods, and many generations of students and trainees of the Faculty. Faculties, Departments, functional departments in the School and many agencies and organizations in the field of Information and Library across the country, attended and congratulated.

The predecessor was the Library Group in the Faculty of History of Hanoi National University in 1973. In 1996, it became the Department of Library Information under the University, continuing to develop into a Faculty level with 3 affiliated departments. The Faculty gathers nearly 20 highly qualified staff and dozens of part-time lecturers who are experts from Ministries, Departments, Branches and research agencies. The Faculty is implementing two training majors: Library Science and Information Science, harmoniously combining basic science and applied science... 43 years of tradition and 20 years of establishment - impressive numbers show many things. That is enough time to experience difficulties and challenges, creating momentum for reaching new heights with the ambitions of youth. On this important occasion, the Faculty of Information and Communications was honored to receive many certificates of merit at all levels: Certificate of merit from the Director of VNU for the Faculty, Certificate of merit from the Director of VNU for the Department of Information and Documentation, Certificate of merit from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism for the Faculty's contributions to the development of the industry.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Do Van Hung, Head of the Faculty of Information and Library, on behalf of the staff, lecturers and students of the Faculty, welcomed the delegates to attend and share the joy in the great celebration of the Faculty. Dr. Do Van Hung expressed his gratitude to the generations of leaders of the Faculty through the periods (Dr. Cao Thi Bach Mai, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Van, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Quy) and the leaders of VNU, University of Social Sciences and Humanities; domestic and foreign agencies, organizations, partners ... and the generations of students and trainees who have contributed to the stature of the Faculty of Information and Library today. The speech of the Head of the Faculty of Information and Library proudly shared: “The Faculty's staff has matured and been well-trained from famous universities around the world. We are always proud that the Faculty is always a united group, respects humanity and has a high sense of responsibility in work. The Faculty has a full range of training programs from bachelor to doctorate and is always updated. The system of lectures and textbooks is rich, the system of training equipment is modern. International cooperation relations are expanded. The Faculty has trained more than 2,000 bachelors and more than 200 masters. Generations of students and trainees of the Faculty have been working in many different fields in all regions of the country, making important contributions to the development of the country..."

Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan, Vice Principal, on behalf of the school's leaders, congratulated the Faculty of Information Technology and Television: "The school is especially proud of the outstanding and pioneering scientific and social activities of the Faculty in recent years such as: Right to access information, open educational resources, information capacity, school-wide IT competition, humanities book tree... In particular, the school highly expects the Faculty to promote the development of some important orientations such as: information society, connection, sharing. Accordingly, the Faculty needs to be more bold in its orientation on information management, expanding professions, meeting the labor market, and needs to innovate more strongly in the coming time."Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan also emphasized that the outstanding activities of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communications not only affirm the prestige, professional capacity and social responsibility of the Faculty, but also contribute practically to affirming the position of the University in the community and society.

At the ceremony, the Faculty of Information and Communications presented flowers to pay tribute to the generations of leaders of the Department and the Faculty through the periods: Associate Professor, People's Teacher Le Mau Han (former Head of the History Department of Hanoi National University, one of the first people to have the idea and lay the foundation for the formation of the Faculty), Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Van (former Head of the Faculty), Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Thinh (former Deputy Head of the Library Department of the History Department), Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Quy (former Head of the Faculty from 2000-2014), Dr. Nguyen Huy Chuong (former Deputy Head of the Information and Communications Department), Master. Tran Huu Huynh (former Deputy Head of the Faculty). On behalf of the generations of leaders of the Faculty, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Quy was moved to speak, sharing the indelible marks in the memory, the difficulties and challenges, the concerns and dedication of generations of staff and lecturers of the Faculty to have today. Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Quy has been involved in almost the entire development of the Faculty (since 1975 when she was a student of K20 of the Faculty of History, majoring in Library and Bibliography, until now, 41 years). Continuing the passion of previous generations of leaders and lecturers, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Quy has made particularly important contributions to the strong development in both scale and stature, as well as the identity of the Faculty of Information and Communications today. Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Quy sent a message to the faculty in 8 words:Mind, Virtue, Intelligence, Innovation, Development.

In her congratulatory speech to the Faculty of Information and Communications, Dr. Vu Duong Thuy Nga - Director of the Library Department (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) said: “Over the past time, the Faculty of Information and Library has had many achievements in training a team of professional, dedicated and dynamic library staff, contributing to the development of the library career in Vietnam. I am very impressed with the innovations of the Faculty, the international conferences, the young and studious lecturers with high qualifications in the field of library information today. Training new human resources, at the same time focusing on training and improving the qualifications of the library staff so that library management is increasingly professional and modern in the context of social development, promoting the application of current technology".

Also at the ceremony, Mr. Pham The Khang - Chairman of the Vietnam Library Association congratulated the Faculty of Information Technology and Library and emphasized: "In the internet era, connecting, sharing and integrating are the common trends of IT-TV. The Vietnam Library Association recommends that the Faculty act as the core, establishing a national association of IT-TV training institutions, contributing to improving the quality of training high-quality human resources for the industry."

Celebrating the 43rd anniversary of tradition and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Faculty of Information and Communications, the collective of leaders, lecturers, students and trainees from all periods gathered together to look back at the achievements and look forward to the future with a youthful spirit and ambitious ambitions.
