The visit of the President of Ireland to Vietnam National University, Hanoi is of particular importance, not only contributing to consolidating and strengthening the good relationship between Vietnam and Ireland but also promoting comprehensive cooperation between the two countries, especially in the fields of education, training and scientific research, making a positive contribution to the educational reform and socio-economic development of Vietnam.

Attending the reception for Irish President Michael Daniel Higgins at VNU were Director Nguyen Kim Son and the Deputy Directors; leaders of the Office, functional departments, member and affiliated units, along with a large number of VNU staff and students.

Attending the program from the Vietnamese side were Mr. Dao Viet Trung – Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Head of the Office of the President; Mr. Pham Dai Duong – Deputy Minister of Science and Technology; and Mr. Nguyen Van Thao – Vietnamese Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Ireland. International guests included the Irish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charles Flanagan, the Irish Ambassador to Vietnam, Cait Moran, and representatives from Irish diplomatic missions.

Expressing his joy and honor in welcoming the President of Ireland to Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Director Nguyen Kim Son said that in recent years, cooperation in education, training, and vocational training between Ireland and Vietnam has expanded significantly with the attention and support of the Irish Embassy in Vietnam, as well as Enterprise Ireland and Irish AID, etc. Cooperation with leading Irish universities not only contributes to opening opportunities for students and young staff to exchange, learn, and improve their skills, but also strongly develops through collaborative research programs, sharing experiences in developing higher education, and supporting the development of new training programs in Vietnam.

As a leading university in Vietnam, VNU has also implemented many collaborative activities with the Irish Embassy in programs such as training young professionals, the Vietnam-Ireland Bilateral Education Cooperation Program (VIBE), developing the Vietnam Economic Annual Report, the Education Annual Report, etc.

In a world facing numerous uncertainties and traditional and non-traditional security challenges, sustainable development has become a global concern. As one of the five countries most affected by climate change according to the World Bank, Vietnam is making strenuous efforts to find solutions to respond to and adapt to climate change in order to achieve sustainable development. In addition to actively participating in many international agreements and conventions and implementing numerous national programs and initiatives, Vietnam is also strengthening cooperation and learning from the experiences of developed countries around the world.

With that in mind, the Director of VNU hopes that the President's remarks will provide important suggestions to help Vietnam refine its strategy and model for sustainable and effective development in the future. At the same time, with VNU's pioneering role in developing research and new training programs such as...Responding to Climate Change, Sustainable Science, Non-Traditional Security,Furthermore, the President's remarks will contribute to encouraging Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) to participate more actively in the country's sustainable development process. Above all, VNU students in particular, and the young generation of Vietnam in general, will have the opportunity to receive the enthusiasm and profound knowledge from President Michael Daniel Higgins to nurture their dreams and aspirations for building a sustainable future for themselves, their country, and humanity.

President Michael Daniel Higgins expressed his honor at being the first Irish President to pay a State visit to Vietnam, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He also expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome from the leaders, staff, teachers, and students of Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

He stated that, during the meeting with President Tran Dai Quang on November 7th, the leaders of Ireland and Vietnam both agreed to consider education and training as a key area of ​​cooperation in the coming period and encouraged educational institutions in both countries to establish partnerships. Witnessing the signing ceremony of the cooperation agreement between two leading universities in Vietnam and Ireland, Vietnam National University, Hanoi and University College Cork, clearly demonstrates this commitment.

President Michael Daniel Higgins highly appreciated and believed that the cooperation between Vietnam National University, Hanoi and University College Cork would help both sides share knowledge, coordinate training projects, conduct many new research programs, and contribute to the sustainable development of both countries.

In his presentation on the topic of Sustainable Development, the President emphasized the factors impacting sustainable development, namely peace, gender equality, the environment, climate change, economic development, culture, society, and especially education. He proposed the need to strengthen international connections in these fields; to take concrete international actions to address climate change; for each nation to enhance its sense of responsibility to the global community, while simultaneously developing specific action programs on sustainable development and calling for the joint efforts of the entire population and society…

In response to a student's question about the President's personal success, Mr. Michael Daniel Higgins shared:You are very fortunate to be studying at Vietnam National University, Hanoi – a university with a long tradition, a leading training institution in Vietnam, where you can freely develop your abilities and creative potential. I hope that students of Vietnam National University, Hanoi in particular, and young Vietnamese people in general, will strive to study and train themselves; practice critical thinking and argumentation; and continuously enrich their knowledge through observation, learning, reading, and research. I believe that in the future, you will become a bridge of knowledge not only domestically and regionally but also internationally, building a global network that contributes to the prosperous development of humanity."

The signing ceremony between Vietnam National University, Hanoi and University College Cork (Ireland) took place at the Presidential Palace.

Earlier, in the presence of President Michael Daniel Higgins and President Tran Dai Quang, on the morning of November 7, 2016, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) and University College Cork (UCC) signed a comprehensive cooperation agreement to further strengthen the cooperative relationship built on the achievements of the past years. This is a vivid testament to the effective cooperation between VNU and a leading Irish university, contributing to elevating the good relationship between Vietnam and Ireland.

 

Irish President Michael Daniel Higgins was born in 1941 in Limerick, Ireland. He is a politician and cultural activist (writer, poet, television scriptwriter, etc.). He is the ninth President of Ireland, having won the Irish presidential election held on October 27, 2011.

He graduated from the University of Galway and then worked as a lecturer there. President Higgins pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Manchester (England) and served as a visiting lecturer at Southern Illinois University (USA).

 

Some of the cooperation programs between Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Irish educational partners include:

Currently, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has signed bilateral cooperation agreements with the National University of Dublin and Pacific Land. Several member units of VNU have signed cooperation agreements with Irish partners such as: the University of Economics with Trinity University Dublin; the University of Social Sciences and Humanities with University College Cork. Recently, with the support and close cooperation of the Irish Embassy in Vietnam, VNU has conducted bilateral cooperation and exchange activities, focusing on areas where both sides have strengths, specifically as follows:

Cooperation in training

- Collaborating with Pacific Land Vietnam (PLV) to train high-quality human resources in biotechnology; providing teaching and research equipment;

- The Ireland-Vietnam Development Experience Sharing Programme (IDEAS) at University College Dublin (UCD) - an annual scholarship for Master's degree training for VNU staff.

- A collaborative project between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and University College Cork (UCC): building capacity in key areas of international studies in a rapidly evolving context.

Research collaboration

- Collaboration with the University of Economics: supporting the Center for Economic and Policy Research in conducting research on social enterprises; supporting a research project on the current state of small and medium-sized enterprises in Vietnam; supporting the development of the 2012 Annual Economic Report "Facing the Challenges of Economic Restructuring";

- Collaborating and supporting the development of the Vietnam Annual Education Report, chaired by the University of Education, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

Other collaborations

- Enterprise Irish, in collaboration with VNU, organized a study tour to explore the Irish education system (in 2012 and 2014) and introduced several Irish universities to work with VNU.

- Collaboration in organizing the Ireland-Vietnam Education Workshop in December 2012;

- Coordinate the reception of Irish ministerial delegations and leaders from Irish universities visiting and interacting with students of Vietnam National University, Hanoi;

- VNU Hanoi and University of Cork organized a short-term training course to improve the foreign language skills of staff members of the Faculty of Science, VNU Hanoi.

- Organize a photo week about the country and people of Ireland on the campuses of the University of Technology and the University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
