“Research and teaching Vietnamese language and Vietnamese studies in universities”

On November 3, 2018, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities organized an international scientific conference on “Research and teaching Vietnamese language and Vietnamese studies in universities”. The conference was attended by experts in Vietnamese language and Vietnamese studies in Vietnam and many universities around the world. Nearly 100 papers were submitted to the conference.

In his opening speech, Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh (Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities) shared: The conference was held on a very special occasion when the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language will celebrate its 50th anniversary. From the first task assigned by the Government to train Vietnamese for foreign students according to the Agreement between the Vietnamese government and other countries, up to now, the Faculty has become a prestigious center for training Vietnamese language and Vietnamese studies in Vietnam as well as in the region and the world.

Vietnamese is a bridge for cooperation and mutual understanding, helping to promote friendship between Vietnam and the world. In the context of strong international integration today, the need to learn Vietnamese and Vietnamese culture is increasing. Vietnamese has become a general subject or a specialized subject at many universities around the world. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is on the way to becoming an advanced research university with the responsibility and mission of bringing Vietnamese language and culture to many places around the world, helping people around the world understand Vietnam.

The school also takes on the responsibility of building and developing Vietnamese Studies to become a factor that truly participates in social life effectively and strongly; closely linked to the life and innovation of Vietnam. Vietnamese Studies needs to gather interdisciplinary scientists to solve macro-level problems, and at the same time needs to connect information to build an increasingly growing community of Vietnamese Studies in the world.

Mr. Saadi Salaman, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the State of Palestine to Vietnam

Mr. Saadi Salaman, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the State of Palestine to Vietnam, a former student of the Faculty of Vietnamese Language, class of 1980-1984, shared his love for Vietnamese: “To speak Vietnamese well, you need to have a love for Vietnam in general and a love for the Vietnamese language in particular. You must have a passion for the culture, customs, habits and long-standing traditions, the glorious history of Vietnam”. That love will help foreigners overcome difficulties and persevere with the Vietnamese language. He expressed his gratitude to the teachers of the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language, because “without the help, support and sympathy from the teachers of the Faculty, I would not have been as successful as I am today”.

Ms. Tsujimoto Chika - Head of Political Section, First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan

Another former student of the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Language - Ms. Tsujimoto Chika (Head of Political Department, First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan) said: During her years of studying at the Faculty, it was the desire to become a bridge of friendship and cooperation between Japan and Vietnam that motivated her to do her best in studying Vietnamese language and culture. She also congratulated the Faculty's achievements over the past 50 years in promoting Vietnamese language and Vietnamese studies to the world.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thien Nam - Head of the Department of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language presented a report at the plenary session.

At the opening session, delegates listened to the main presentations: “Sixty years of teaching Vietnamese and Vietnamese studies to foreigners at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU” by Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thien Nam (Head of the Department of Vietnamese Studies and Language); “More than fifty years of training Vietnamese and Vietnamese studies at the University of Korean Foreign Studies (HUFS)” by Professor, Dr. Song Jeong Nam (University of Korean Foreign Studies) and Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Phuc (University of Social Sciences and Humanities); “Vietnamese language and Vietnamese studies teaching program at Charles University - Czech Republic” by Dr. Binh Slavická (Charles University - Czech Republic).

The International Scientific Conference on “Research and Teaching Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Studies in Universities” summarizes the latest achievements in the field of Vietnamese language teaching and Vietnamese studies research domestically and internationally. The Conference has two subcommittees on “Vietnamese Linguistics and Teaching Methods” and “Vietnamese Studies”. The scale of this Conference has demonstrated the growing interest of world scholars in the above two fields and promoted stronger cooperation and exchange within the community of Vietnamese scholars worldwide.
