Current issues of modern Vietnamese
As part of the annual professional activities of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, on the afternoon of April 6, 2012, the Faculty of Linguistics successfully organized the Student Scientific Research Conference for the 2011-2012 school year. The conference was attended by many Linguistics professors inside and outside the Faculty, along with Linguistics students and those who love Linguistics and Vietnamese. This year's Scientific Research Conference has a total of 17 topics, of which 8 topics were selected to present to the Council and the entire Conference. The topics mainly revolve around applied issues of Linguistics such as teaching Vietnamese, marketing language, translation, etc. In addition, there are topics in the fields of ethnic minority languages, dialects, sociolinguistics, and place names. The highlight of this Linguistics student research conference is the close follow-up of current issues of the Vietnamese language such as confusion /l/ - /n/, the controversial "stylish idiom" "Sát thủ đầu mưng" etc. Commenting on the topic of the second-year student group - surveying "Sát thủ đầu mưng", Prof. Dr. Dinh Van Duc highly appreciated the spirit and research efforts of the students, and reminded: Language always has its own filter, what is accepted by the native community will stay, otherwise they will certainly be gradually eliminated. The "stylish idioms" in this book will also be reviewed through that natural filter. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Dat affirmed that they are cognitive additions to the thinking of Vietnamese people, so we cannot deny them as distortions of the original idiom. Also agreeing with the opinions of other professors, Professor Dr. Tran Tri Doi recommends that students should re-read his interview to have a more rational and tolerant view of this special book. Another hot topic is the topic of surveying the status of using standard/non-standard variants /l/-/n/ in some areas of Vinh Phuc province, which is also highly appreciated for the author's meticulousness in investigating and analyzing the data (Duong Thi Hong Yen - K53). This is a sociolinguistic study with good reference value for current language policy makers. The topic of surveying the phonological characteristics of the Khmu language by student K54 - Ta Quang Tung "scored" because of the large level of technology application (using specialized phonetic analysis software) in phonetic/phonological research. This study on the Khmu language is valuable for comparative research on the history of Vietnamese because these two languages belong to the same South Asian language family, the Mon-Khmer branch. Some other topics such as Translation of English-Vietnamese literary book titles, Survey of salt-making language, etc. were also well evaluated at this Conference.

Finally, after more than 3 hours of presentation and heated discussion, the Conference ended with 2 first prizes, 4 second prizes, 6 third prizes and 5 consolation prizes awarded. (See details here) Summarizing the Conference, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Chinh - Vice Head of the Faculty - commented: Although this year's Student Scientific Research Conference had fewer topics than previous years, in terms of quality, there was clearly a marked improvement. The reports all presented issues that were very close and practical to the Vietnamese language. Although some topics still expressed the sometimes "innocent" feelings of the students, it can be said that the spirit of scientific research of all groups and individuals participating in the conference in particular and all students of the Faculty of Linguistics in general is very commendable, which is the most excellent result that this year's Conference has achieved.
