The 2nd Student Scientific Conference of the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language was held on March 29, 2012. Twenty papers were presented in two subcommittees. This was the second time that students from the faculty participated in scientific research and presented their findings to a large audience of faculty members and students. Many international students studying at the faculty also attended and participated in lively discussions. Most of the topics chosen by the students were traditional in nature and relevant to their respective fields of study. Topics focusing on festivals were quite popular, such as "The Rice Planting Festival of the Tay-Nung ethnic group in Viet Bac" by Le Hoai Thu, "Xoan singing in Phu Tho" by Nguyen Thi Thu Hue, "Love Market - A unique form of cultural activity" by Le Thanh Thu and Pham Hai Yen, "Fishing Festival" by Le Thi Ha Trang, "Legends and Festivals of Mau Lieu Hanh" by Le Thi Huyen and Nguyen Thi Trang, and "Legends and Festivals of Chu Dong Tu and Tien Dung" by Vu Thi Thu Huyen and Dang Thi Ngan (accounting for 6 out of 20 reports). The topic of exploring ancient cultural relics in modern economic and cultural life is also of interest, such as "Exploiting cultural heritage for tourism and economic development: Current situation and solutions from the case of Duong Lam ancient village" by Pham Thi Canh, "Pho Hien relics in modern life" by Nguyen Thi Thu Ha and Nguyen Thi Thu Nhung, "Hanoi Old Quarter in the market economy era" by Le Thi Lan, "Cultural transformation - a perspective from ancient villages in the outskirts of Hanoi (the case of Cu Da and Mong Phu ancient villages)" by Nguyen Van Truong and Nguyen Thu Huong (4 reports). Two authors chose to explore the topic of ancestor worship: Duong Thi Thu Huong with the topic "The beauty in the ancestor worship customs of the San Diu people" and Nguyen Thi Huyen with the topic "Basic features in the blending of Brahmanism and indigenous Cham beliefs in the South Central coastal region". Two topics on Vietnamese women were explored: "The Ideal Woman in Traditional Vietnamese Society" by Nguyen Thi Ngan and "The Role of Female Youth Volunteers in the Anti-American Resistance War" by the group of authors Nguyen Thi Quynh Mai, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, and Pham Thi Thuong. The remaining six topics were by Dao Anh Tuan: "The Content Value of Thai Narrative Poetry on the Theme of Love"; Nguyen Thi Kieu Nhu: "Distinctive Features in the Clothing of Some Ethnic Groups in Northwest Vietnam"; Tran Thi Anh Hong: "Exploring the Culinary Foundations of the Hmong People in Northwest Vietnam"; Tran Thi Thu Huyen, Nguyen Thi Le, and Vu Thi Hang: "The Impact of the Hallyu Wave on Vietnamese Youth"; Nguyen Thi Ngan: "The National Name of Vietnam Through Feudal Dynasties"; and Do Thanh Tinh: "The Mysterious Beauty of Ba Be Lake". Overall, the quality of the reports presented was quite good. The authors invested time, effort, and intellect in surveying and researching to discover new and unique aspects of each topic, offering convincing assessments and solutions to preserve and promote cultural values to serve economic and tourism development needs and maintain national cultural identity. Besides exploring topics with traditional values, some boldly explored new, modern, and topical issues such as the impact of the Hallyu wave on Vietnamese youth or Hanoi's Old Quarter in the market economy era. It is worth emphasizing that students have become increasingly familiar with writing and presenting scientific research papers. The scientific reports were presented according to regulations and received positive feedback from the audience. The discussions and exchanges were also very interesting, creating a truly scientific atmosphere and minimizing the gap between teachers and students, and between Vietnamese and foreign students. If there was any regret, the general feeling among the participants was that the time spent researching a topic (from the initial planning to the conference) seemed too short. Therefore, many meticulously researched topics lacked truly convincing presentations. As a result, the Faculty Board evaluated and awarded prizes to the highly-rated topics, including one first prize, one second prize, one third prize, and one consolation prize.
