The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) is an intergovernmental organization established in 1965, currently with 11 Southeast Asian countries participating. The Council currently consists of 24 Regional Centers, operating mainly in the fields of training and research in education, science and culture.

The Center for Archaeology and Fine Arts (SPAFA) under the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) is headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand.

Among the 24 current member units, the Center for Archaeology and Fine Arts (SPAFA) was formed in 1971 under the name of the Center for Applied Research in Archaeology and Fine Arts. In 1978, the Center implemented the Archaeology and Fine Arts Project, which was implemented stably every year, and in 1985, the Center for Archaeology and Fine Arts (SPAFA) was officially formed.

Currently, the Scientific Council of SPAFA includes representatives from 8 countries: Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Since the end of 2017, the Ministry of Education and Training has introduced Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan (Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi) to represent Vietnam to join the Scientific Council of SEAMEO - SPAFA for the 2017-2020 term.

SEAMEO - SPAFA Scientific Council held its 2018 annual meeting to decide on activities for 2018/2019

Currently, SEAMEO - SPAFA is implementing a series of professional activities, from capacity building projects for researchers to independent research programs, seminars and publications. SEAMEO - SPAFA is currently focusing on implementing 3 major programs:Advancing Southeast Asian Archeology;Sacred Universe;Conservation in the Tropics.

Within the framework of these three main programs, many Vietnamese researchers in general, and staff of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in particular, have participated in many activities of SPAFA. After the success of the Southeast Asian Archaeological Development Project in 2016-2017, in March 2018, two lecturers of the University, Dr. Do Thi Huong Thao and MSc. Hoang Van Diep (Faculty of History) attended the training course.Disaster Risk Management for Cultural Heritage in Southeast Asiain Bagan (Myanmar). It is expected that next year, SEAMEO – SPAFA will focus on organizing activities related toMaritime and Underwater Cultural Archeology and DatabaseandUrban Heritage and Conservation, including activities held in Vietnam.
