In the historical context and his relationships with the mandarins and military generals of the Nguyen Dynasty in the first half of the 19th century, Nguyen Cong Tru emerged as a talented personality, a manager with a strong personality and great fortitude.

Nguyen Cong Tru was born in November of the year Mau Tuat 1778 in Quynh Coi district, Thai Binh. He was famous for his intelligence and spirit since childhood, but his family was poor and he had a hard time in the examinations. At the age of 42, he passed the Giai Nguyen exam, held various positions from Hanh Tau, Bien Tu to Huu Tham Tri, Dinh Dien Su; after suppressing the rebellion in Tra Ly, Bao Lac, he was promoted to Governor, Minister, Left Capital Censor, and Advisor. However, he was also demoted many times, from Thi Lang to Tri Huyen in Kinh, Tham Tri to Lang Trung, Tham Tan to soldier. The Governor of Thua Thien Hue was his last official position before he retired in the year Mau Than (1848). After expressing his will to fight the French at the age of 80 but was rejected, he passed away in the year Mau Ngo (1858) due to serious illness.

Nguyen Cong Tru is considered a man of “national salvation”, both literary and martial arts, from defeating bandits, reclaiming land and establishing villages, to being the Chief Examiner of the examination hall, and the Head of the A Dao singing association. He made many diverse contributions in many fields: in terms of security and politics, he built coastal defense lines, established sovereignty over seas and islands; in terms of economy, he renovated the irrigation system, gathered residents, and reclaimed wasteland; in terms of culture and society, he was an outstanding poet and writer, leaving behind many profound philosophies, harmonizing Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism about the fate of each human life and the human world.

Thereby, the paper pointed out the inheritance and development of Nguyen Cong Tru’s thoughts with later Vietnamese thinkers.

Thereby, the author affirmed the contributions of this marine thinking to maintaining stability and economic development of the Nguyen Dynasty.

From there, the paper argues that, in order to understand the works of a medieval Confucian scholar like Nguyen Cong Tru, it is necessary to flexibly and creatively apply intertextual theory and reception theory to medieval literature; it is necessary to put the text in relation to his biography.
