The book "Sexual Culture in Vietnam from the 10th to 19th Centuries" by Dr. Pham Van Hung was launched.

Over the past decade or so, in Vietnamese literary and cultural life, the topic of sexuality seems to have become a hot topic, sometimes even a marketing strategy used by many writers to attract readers.
While many literary critics are striving to identify, describe, and interpret sexual themes/elements in contemporary literature, young researcher Pham Van Hung is going against the grain, presenting his work.Sexual culture in Vietnam in the 10th-19th centuriesThis work immediately attracted the attention of academic experts. It can be seen that Vietnamese sexual culture during the 10 medieval centuries, despite its diverse manifestations, lacked comprehensive summaries and written records. Pham Van Hung's work is an attempt to fill this research gap. Faced with the difficulty of lacking national documents and literary records, the author chose to reconstruct Vietnamese sexual culture from the 10th to 19th centuries primarily through two written sources: history and literature.

The work is structured into three chapters: Chapter 1/ BETWEEN CEREMONY AND LAW: INSTINCT AND NORMS, Chapter 2/ THE MAJOR MATTER OF SEX: AESTHETICS AND PLEASURE, and Chapter 3/ TURNING POINTS AND SPECIFIC SEXUAL PHENOMENA.
Amidst the sexual lives of the majority, here and there, there are still distinct sexual deviations and phenomena within the sexual culture of medieval Vietnam. Because they are few and unique, these sexual phenomena are often not recorded or are recorded with many ambiguities and gaps. The contribution of this work...Sexual culture in Vietnam in the 10th-19th centuriesIt is also the first step in clarifying these ambiguities and filling in these gaps.
Through Pham Van Hung's work, readers gain a deeper understanding that there are "legacies" of medieval sexual culture that modern times are inheriting, even after centuries, still retaining the "naivety" of the beginning, with misconceptions and prejudices that have become ingrained and are not easily overcome, and limitations and shortcomings lurking in the layers and strata of sexual culture sediments, the causes of which do not only stem from social inequality or gender inequality.
Dr. Pham Van Hung was born in 1983. First Prize.Young Vietnamese scientific talents, Ministry of Education and Training, 2014. Currently working at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
