Over the past ten years or so, in Vietnamese cultural and literary life, the topic of sex seems to have become a hot topic as something fashionable, sometimes becoming one of the strategies to attract readers of many writers.
While many critical researchers are trying to identify, describe and interpret sexual themes/elements in contemporary literature, young researcher Pham Van Hung goes against the flow and presents his work.Sexual culture in Vietnam in the 10th and 19th centuries, immediately attracted the attention of academic experts. It can be seen that the sexual culture of Vietnam in the 10th century of the Middle Ages, although having very diverse manifestations, lacked summaries and transmissions through written documents. Pham Van Hung's work is an effort to fill this research gap. Faced with the difficulty of lacking documents and national culture, the author of the work chose the solution of reconstructing the sexual culture of Vietnam in the 10th - 19th centuries mainly through two written sources: history and literature.
The work is structured into 3 chapters: Chapter 1/ BETWEEN CEREMONY AND LAW: INSTINCT AND NORMS, Chapter 2/ THE GREAT AFFAIRS OF THE BEDROOM: AESTHETICS AND PLEASURE and Chapter 3/ SPECIAL SEXUAL PHENOMENA AND DIVISIONS.
Among the sexual life of the majority, here and there, there are still sexual crossroads and specific sexual phenomena in the sexual culture of Vietnam in the Middle Ages. Because they are few and specific, these sexual phenomena are often not recorded or recorded with many obscure points and gaps. Contribution of the workSexual culture in Vietnam in the 10th and 19th centuriesIt is also the first step in clarifying these blurred points and filling in these gaps.
Through Pham Van Hung's work, readers understand more that there are "legacies" of medieval sexual culture that modern times are inheriting, even after centuries it still retains the "simple" nature of the beginning with misconceptions and prejudices that have become ruts that are not easy to overcome and there are limitations and shortcomings that permeate the layers and veins of sexual culture sediments, the cause of which does not only come from social inequality or gender inequality.
