Looking back at the major stages in Ma Van Khang's literary career, with 22 years in Lao Cai (Northwest Vietnam), and from 1976 to the present in Hanoi, having held many different positions and currently being a member of the Vietnam Writers Association; it can be affirmed that the achievements in the half-century creative journey of writer Ma Van Khang are considered substantial: with over 200 short stories and essays, 13 novels, and a literary memoir. These are his greatest contributions to art and also the most precious gifts Ma Van Khang gives in return for the public's affection and acceptance of his works over the past few decades. Along with novels, short stories are a field that holds great appeal for Ma Van Khang. In fact, this is the genre that Ma Van Khang writes with great enthusiasm, frequently, and which also receives much attention from readers. Short stories led the writer to his literary career, and it was also the first genre in which Ma Van Khang achieved significant success throughout his writing journey. It is a genre close to everyday life and very dynamic, delving into burning and pressing issues that readers care about. Therefore, for Ma Van Khang, writing short stories is as natural as breathing for survival. Within this vast world of characters, we can tentatively categorize them into four types: weak characters, tragic characters, alienated characters, and characters who transcend their fate. Sharing the function of generalizing reality and character, each character type, with its fundamental characteristics, also serves as a means of conveying the author's humanistic views on human destiny. From the late 1980s to the present, through the weak characters, the lost characters, the alienated characters, the tragic characters, and the characters who transcend their fate, Ma Van Khang has expressed a burning desire for human perfection. He sought to trace the origins of evil, wickedness, and the multifaceted manifestations of moral decay in human character by deeply exploring and dissecting the actions and hidden psychological developments of his characters, with the aim of allowing readers to compare, examine themselves, and draw lessons for self-improvement. Chapter 3: The Art of Character Development in Ma Van Khang's Short Stories. Examining the world of characters in Ma Van Khang's short stories after 1986, we believe that the author's art of character development focuses primarily on three elements: physical appearance, spiritual beliefs, and language and tone. By using physical appearance to deduce character, Ma Van Khang brought novelty and appeal to his works. Along with physical appearance, from a spiritual perspective, the author infused his stories with the rich essence of traditional Vietnamese literature. Using goodness and beauty to eliminate the bad and unwholesome aspects of humanity, contributing to bringing people back to their true human nature. In the art of character building, Ma Van Khang pays special attention to the element of language. Each type of person is associated with specific and often unchanging language. Through this language, the character and qualities of the person are clearly revealed. In short, on his path to the artistic world, Ma Van Khang considers human beings as the object and material for perceiving reality and creating art. Moreover, these character models contribute to profoundly expressing the writer's artistic conceptions of human destiny and life.
