ButThis thesis is the first study in Vietnam to review every article from the two magazinesNew Youth (La Jeunesse)andThe Renaissance, together with selected articles from other journals to examine views and practices of women's liberation in the New Culture Movement. In the context that research on the New Cultural Movement in Vietnam is still incomplete and incomprehensive, this thesis is the first intensive and systematic in-depth study in Vietnam about women's liberation in the New Culture Movement.
ButFrom synthesizing and analyzing different sources of reference materials, this thesis generalizes achievements and limitations of the Movement in terms of culture, ideology, education, and society. This study is also the first to conduct a comparative analysis of the two laws: theGreat Qing Codeand theRepublic of China's Civil Law, in order to examine the New Cultural Movement's influence on shaping regulations related to women in Chinese law.
ButMore importantly, this thesis is the first study to explore the women's liberation effect of the New Culture Movement in Vietnam. By comparing and contrasting Phan Khoi (1887-1959)'s writing in 21 articles and one novel with the women's liberation idea of ​​the New Cultural Movement, this thesis uncovers a number of reliable indications the effect of women's liberation from the New Cultural Movement in Vietnam, thus opening up a new research direction that is valuable and promising.
