11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:
(1) The thesis has systematized theories on children's happiness in the world and added to the theoretical research system that is only just beginning to be studied in Vietnam in recent years. A review of studies on the relationship between the exercise of children's right to participation in school and their happiness shows that there have been some studies on this issue in the world. The research results all suggest that children's participation is related to children's happiness. However, these studies have not addressed the exercise of children's right to participation in relation to their happiness at school as well as their general happiness in life.
The concept of students' happiness is considered on two levels: (1) children's general happiness is approached according to the theoretical model of Diener and colleagues including: life satisfaction, many positive emotions and few negative emotions (2) school satisfaction.
The theoretical model of this thesis is built upon the relationship between the realization of children's right to participation in school and children's sense of happiness. This relationship is a close connection between actions and behaviors that realize regulations on children's right to participation in school and the subjective positive psychological state of children, manifested in the experience of positive emotions significantly outweighing negative emotions, and satisfaction with life in general, and with school in particular, in some way.
Building upon and systematizing research from around the world and in Vietnam, the perception of happiness is defined as experiencing many positive emotions, few negative emotions, and satisfaction with school (three-component happiness) and overall satisfaction with school. Factors such as teacher support, peer support, and the student's personal characteristics also influence their perception of happiness at school.
The thesis highlighted research trends regarding children's and students' participation in school activities. The majority of studies showed that children's participation influences their sense of happiness.
In practice
- The implementation of students' right to participation in schools is still limited, mainly at the level of providing information. Participation in activities or expressing opinions remains very restricted. This affects students' sense of happiness when participating in activities that exercise their right to participation at school, and the relationship between these two aspects.
- The research results also show that exercising students' right to participate in school brings them many positive emotions when they participate.
- There is a correlation between children's participation rights in middle school and their sense of happiness, however, the correlation is moderate to weak.
- There is no difference in the correlation between the realization of children's participation rights and feelings of happiness at school and overall happiness in life.
- Factors related to school (teachers, friends, learning attitudes, etc.) are significantly more predictive of feelings of happiness at school.
- Students' sense of happiness at school depends on many different factors, and the realization of children's right to participation is just one of the factors influencing students' sense of happiness.
- Practical research results reveal a very interesting aspect: exercising the right to participation does not directly have a significant impact on students' feelings of happiness at school. However, the research indicates that mediating factors, along with children's exercise of the right to participation, such as self-assessment, recognition, and support from teachers and peers, contribute to a greater sense of overall happiness in life and at school.
- There was no difference in perceived happiness when exercising the right to participation in school between students in public and private schools.
12. Practical applications:
The research findings of this thesis can be used as a useful reference for researchers in child psychology, children's rights, and some applicable content in schools to help children be happier at school.
13. Future research directions:
- The research results also open up a new research approach to students' perceptions of happiness in school, suggesting that the factors influencing this need to be considered in a more diverse and holistic way. This is because students' perceptions of happiness in school are influenced and governed by many different factors.
