This thesis, based on research and surveys on religious practices, further clarifies the worship of Mother Goddess, deities, and the national hero Nguyen Trung Truc by the people of Kien Giang.
Since ancient times, the Vietnamese people have held a strong belief and sacred reverence for deities and supernatural forces, believing in life after death and that ancestors, lineage, and the deceased are also spiritual protectors of the living. From this belief, the people have established temples and built religious sites such as communal houses, pagodas, shrines, and hermitages to worship supernatural forces and the deceased. These practices have become cultural and spiritual values that contribute to connecting the community.
Beliefs and their practices have the potential to meet the spiritual and mental needs of all social classes: the need for comfort, sharing, and solace in worldly sorrow and loss; the desire for a spiritual anchor to face challenges and risks from nature and society; they are the "glue that binds the community," the "spiritual energy," encouraging people to strive for goodness and truth, goodness, and beauty—the three important pillars of culture. This is the foundation of humanism.
The people of the Southwest region of Vietnam have a belief that "born a general, died a god," honoring the patriotic soldiers and heroes who sacrificed their lives and blood to repel invading enemies, fighting for justice and dedicating themselves to the people and the nation. Therefore, the death anniversaries of these national heroes are solemnly celebrated with meaningful ceremonies.
The moral principles of gratitude and the continuation of ancestral traditions only become an intrinsic part of the belief system when these principles are expressed through mystical and sacred rituals. Ancestor worship rituals in Vietnam are influenced by Confucianism, but also contain elements closely related to Buddhism and Taoism. These ritual practices are often performed according to folk beliefs and are not entirely uniform across families, clans, and localities.
The Law on Beliefs and Religions, enacted in 2016 and effective from January 1, 2018, stipulates in Article 2, Explanation of Terms, as follows:
"Beliefs are people's beliefs expressed through rituals associated with traditional customs and practices to bring spiritual peace to individuals and communities."
Religious activities include the worship of ancestors and sacred symbols; commemorating and honoring those who have contributed to the country and the community; and folk rituals that exemplify historical, cultural, and social moral values. Religious festivals are collective religious activities organized according to traditional rituals to meet the spiritual needs of the community. Religious establishments are places where community religious activities are carried out, such as communal houses, temples, shrines, ancestral churches, and other similar establishments.
Beliefs are a form of expressing the faith and belief of individuals and communities at a certain level of social development and awareness in something sacred, sublime, or worthy of veneration in the human world or a supernatural world. Beliefs and religions differ in form and level of organization. This characteristic not only defines the difference between beliefs and religions but also determines the nature and characteristics of beliefs.
