More Harvard-Yenching scholarship opportunities available for students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

On January 4, 2024, Associate Professor Dr. Dao Thanh Truong, Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH), met with Professor Michael Herzfeld, Professor of Social Sciences, Department of Anthropology, Harvard University. Also attending the meeting were Associate Professor Dr. Le Tuan Anh, Deputy Head of the Cooperation and Development Department, VNU-USSH; and representatives from the Department of Anthropology and the Department of Oriental Studies.
 
Vice Rector Dao Thanh Truong expressed his gratitude to Professor Michael Herzfeld for his contributions and support to the school over the years.
At the meeting, Vice Rector Dao Thanh Truong stated: The University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU-USSH) is a pioneering training institution in social sciences and humanities. Over the past period, the university has continuously improved and enhanced the quality of training in basic sciences, and updated applied sciences to keep pace with societal trends. With 28 undergraduate programs, 36 master's programs, and 32 doctoral programs, the university pays special attention to the team of scientists at VNU-USSH. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities has contributed to many national and international projects and research topics in the field of social sciences, and is also a unit that implements many policy advisory programs for the Vietnamese government.

The University of Social Sciences and Humanities has received numerous scholarships from the Harvard-Yenching Institute in recent years, providing opportunities for students and faculty to study and conduct research at leading academic institutions worldwide. Vice Rector Dao Thanh Truong shared that Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son was one of the first recipients of the Harvard-Yenching scholarship at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Accordingly, Vice Rector Dao Thanh Truong affirmed that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities will continue to maintain and develop its excellent relationship with the Harvard-Yenching Institute, not only in scholarship programs but also in future joint conferences.
Professor Michael Herzfeld highly appreciated the achievements of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in recent years, and expressed his surprise at the quality of training and the rigorous scholarship selection process in Vietnam. The professor also expressed his desire to bring lecturers from other social science disciplines to conduct research in many countries around the world, expanding learning opportunities and access to new knowledge. In the future, Professor Michael Herzfeld hopes to have the opportunity to introduce many professors from universities around the world to work and teach at VNU - USSH.

The Harvard-Yenching Institute funds scholarship programs for faculty and graduate students at leading universities in East, Southeast, and South Asia across all fields of social sciences and humanities. The Institute also supports publications at Harvard and in Asia, publishes book review series and research papers, and supports the Harvard-Yenching Library and other research initiatives.
