International scientific conference “21st Century Archiving: Scientific Knowledge or Information”

On July 1st and 2nd, 2024, in Aix en Provence, France, Aix Marseille University (Institute of Asian Studies – IRASIA), in collaboration with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), the French National Overseas Archives (ANOM), the French School of Far Eastern Studies (EFEO), the Paris School of Advanced Studies (EPHE), and the Vietnam Association of Archival Businesses (VABA), successfully organized the international scientific conference “21st Century Archives: Scientific Knowledge or Information?” in a hybrid format (in-person and online).

Overview of the Conference
In his opening remarks at the workshop, Mr. Guy Le Thiec – Rector of the University of Arts, Literature, Languages ​​and Humanities (UFR ALLSH) of Aix Marseille University – highly appreciated the effective cooperation between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and Aix Marseille University in research and training in archival studies. He hoped that, through this workshop, the cooperative relationship between the two universities would further develop and yield many new achievements in the future.

The international scientific conference "21st Century Archives: Scientific Knowledge or Information?" is a significant scientific event aimed at concretizing the cooperation agreement between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Aix-Marseille University, Republic of France, which was signed in 2017 and renewed in 2022.

The workshop took place over two days with 12 presentations in the plenary session and 11 presentations in two subcommittees, attracting participation from archivists and researchers in various fields from Vietnam, France, Germany, and other countries. The workshop focused on discussing and evaluating the role of archival documents and archival activities in various aspects of social life in the past and present; forecasting opportunities and challenges in archival activities to meet the demands of the ongoing digital transformation worldwide; forecasting and assessing the needs of contemporary society for archival documents and archival activities; and sharing experiences of archivists and researchers in meeting the new requirements of contemporary society and promoting the value of archival documents in the context of the current digital transformation.

Dr. Frédéric Rounstan, representing the Institute of East Asian Studies (IAO), presented his report live at the plenary session of the Conference.
The conference took place in a high-quality, open, and academic atmosphere. It served as an academic forum for scholars to share new research findings on archival science in the 21st century. Understanding the traditional and potential values ​​of archival documents in the face of societal changes, especially in the era of digital transformation, is a topic of great interest to many archives worldwide, including Vietnam. Therefore, research into the contemporary societal need for archival materials remains timely and urgent in many countries, including Vietnam.

Dr. Cam Anh Tuan – Head of the Department of Archival Studies and Office Management – ​​presented a report at the subcommittee session of the Conference.
Also at the conference, Professor Detlef Brisen (University of Giessen – Federal Republic of Germany), representing the editorial team, introduced the book “Archival Science and the digital transformation in Vietnam: Legal and practical issues for the 21st century,” published by Nomos Publishing House. The book comprises articles by faculty and staff from the Department of Archival Studies and Office Management, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), and several other scientists.
Within the framework of the Workshop program, members of the delegation were introduced to the most modern technologies in digitizing and restoring archival documents by leading experts from the French National Overseas Archives (ANOM). This was a valuable professional experience for the faculty of the Department of Archival Studies and Office Management, contributing to improving the quality of scientific research and training to meet the new needs of the archival sector in Vietnam.
