The training course was attended by lecturers from the Department of Linguistics, the Department of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language, and the Center for Vietnamese Language and Culture.
Ms. Nguyen Phuong Chung, originally an English lecturer, had her career path changed by a single statement: "Why not sell what you already have?" Since then, she has embarked on a journey to bring the Vietnamese language to thousands of students around the world.
Ms. Nguyen Phuong Chung shared her insights on how to create more effective and optimized lecture materials.
With nearly 20 years of experience teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language, including 6 years working at Columbia University, Ms. Chung has accumulated valuable experience and researched new and optimal teaching methods.
During the two-day training course, faculty members from various departments were introduced to different approaches, methods, techniques, and teaching strategies suitable for different student groups.
In addition to traditional methods, more effective but less commonly used approaches were also introduced, such as learner-centered, discussion, interactive, and content-focused teaching. In particular, instructors were given the opportunity to experiment with lesson planning and curriculum development using new methods, learning from leading professors in the field of teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language.
Ms. Nguyen Phuong Chung is also working with her colleagues on a new book, focusing entirely on what students need in a practical way in life. The lectures are designed using a reverse engineering model. This is a lecture creation technique that has been applied in many places around the world, but is still quite new in Vietnam. The book is expected to be released in September. Ms. Chung also hopes to share this book with Vietnamese language lecturers and receive their feedback and suggestions after using it.
