Director of VNU Phung Xuan Nha: Need to be steadfast in the goal of building a research university

On behalf of the Party Committee and the Board of Directors, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim - Party Committee Secretary reported on the important achievements of the University in recent years: The University has many changes and strong innovations in training. Training quality is constantly improving. Many new majors and majors have been built to meet social needs and international integration. Scientific research has made remarkable progress in the number of scientific topics at the State and Nafosted levels... Key research programs aim to serve practice and affirm the unique identity of the University. International cooperation activities in scientific research are promoted. International publications and announcements are increasing. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities has signed cooperation agreements with 220 partners, including many leading universities in the region and internationally.

In April 2015, the 27th Party Congress of the University passed a Resolution to develop the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in the direction of a research university and deep integration with the region and the world. The University aims to be in the top 100 universities in Asia by 2020.

Some basic targets for 2020 of the School are: 65% of lecturers have a doctorate degree; 26% have achieved the title of Associate Professor, Professor; the annual graduation rate reaches 90%; completing the planning of industries and majors by opening 6 more bachelor's training majors, 8 master's majors, 4 doctoral majors; 100% of compulsory subjects have textbooks and lectures...

The University of Social Sciences and Humanities also requested VNU to support and create conditions for the University to complete a number of tasks related to: planning training majors and disciplines until 2020; building a number of new majors and disciplines, developing in a modern, interdisciplinary direction; focusing on investing in basic training majors that make up the University's strengths; building a system of major research topics, linking research products and results with solving major problems of the country; building a complete, modern learning materials system and a system of key textbooks; solutions to build a team of highly qualified scientists and managers; building a high school specializing in Social Sciences and Humanities...

Talking to the leaders of VNU, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh - President of the University said: The two biggest questions that the Party Committee and the Board of Directors of the University are always concerned about are how to improve the quality of training and research activities and improve the lives of staff and civil servants. To do this, the University proposes that VNU provide a mechanism to increase the University's initiative and autonomy, especially in recruiting highly qualified staff and researchers; have a satisfactory remuneration regime for scientists; build new high-quality training programs; promote international cooperation; expand the VNU-level research topics system; invest in the Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities; expand and renovate facilities, etc.

After listening to the opinions and discussions, Director Phung Xuan Nha concluded a number of points:

VNU highly appreciates the efforts of the Party Committee in leading the University to complete the tasks assigned by VNU and carry out the University's mission. VNU especially appreciates the democracy and solidarity in the leadership apparatus of the new term. For the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, this will be the beginning of a new development process, on the basis of the existing tradition of solidarity, but with clear division of labor and responsibilities.

The Director of VNU suggested that the University should be steadfast in its goal of building a research-oriented university. Based on the criteria of a research university issued by VNU, the University should review and set specific goals, with a clear roadmap to achieve those goals.

In training activities, the School needs to gradually review, plan, stratify quality, and create a map of training programs with different priorities. The core is the basic training programs, but at the same time, it also focuses on new training programs that are suitable for social needs and meet integration requirements. Training programs that were good in the past but are now not suitable need to be changed, updated, and supplemented. All must have a clear plan and a coherent roadmap.

In scientific research activities, the University also needs to plan research focuses associated with training programs, associated with improving training quality. In the planned research programs, it is necessary to select core programs and projects, connecting with major research programs of VNU to thereby increase resources. In research issues, the University needs to focus on local and national issues, closely following reality.

Finally, the Director of VNU also suggested that the University should continue to improve its proactiveness, dynamism, creativity and decisive action to quickly realize the goal of becoming a research university with a position and reputation in the region and internationally.
