On November 9, 2008, the 50th anniversary celebration of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Hanoi University, was solemnly held at the University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, with the participation of numerous teachers and alumni from various graduating classes. Associate Professor Pham Trong Quat - Vice Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Professor Nguyen Van Khanh - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and Professor Nguyen Hoang Luong - Vice Rector of the University of Science, attended the ceremony.

Fifty years ago, in 1958, the Foreign Language Department of Hanoi University was established with the important task of training foreign languages for the university's scientific staff, lecturers, and researchers. From then on, foreign languages became an official subject in the training program. Initially, the Foreign Language Department was responsible for teaching Russian to students in the Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology departments. Over time, English, French, and Chinese were gradually included in the curriculum. When the need for specialized language training became urgent, Hanoi University decided to establish the Faculty of Foreign Languages in 1978. The Faculty is responsible for teaching Russian, English, French, and Chinese to students in specialized language programs, as well as non-specialized language programs for students in all faculties and systems of the university.
In 1993, when Hanoi National University was established, the staff of the Foreign Languages Department were assigned to work at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the University of Natural Sciences, continuing the task of training foreign languages for students in science disciplines at both universities.
The Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities currently has 36 staff members, including 3 PhDs and 24 Master's degree holders, achieving a rate of 79% of teaching staff with postgraduate qualifications. This is one of the leading units in the university in the transition to a credit-based undergraduate training system. Over the past three years, the department's staff have conducted nearly a dozen research projects at various levels, published 62 scientific articles, compiled 6 lecture notes and 3 specialized foreign language textbooks at the undergraduate level. The department has consistently achieved the title of outstanding collective labor unit and has received numerous commendations and awards from the university and Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
The Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Science currently has 31 full-time staff members, including 1 PhD and 19 Master's degree holders. The department is responsible for teaching English to all training programs at the university and French to some training programs. The department has compiled 19 specialized English textbooks and reference books, conducted 18 research projects at various levels, and published over 60 scientific articles. The unit has consistently received the title of Advanced Labor Collective.
At the ceremony, Associate Professor Pham Trong Quat, Vice Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, acknowledged the contributions of the Foreign Language Department of the Faculty of Science and the Foreign Language Department of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities to the development of Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The Associate Professor also affirmed Vietnam National University, Hanoi's commitment and investment in foreign language training, supporting initiatives to develop new models combining foreign language training with other majors, as proposed by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.
The ceremony was not only an occasion to acknowledge the achievements of the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Hanoi University over its 50-year history, but also a touching reunion of many generations of teachers and students of the Faculty.
