The first Doctoral Day in Social Sciences took place on November 30, 2008 at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. This was a meeting to introduce to those involved or interested in the projects being carried out, especially for those doing research in the field of social sciences to share ideas, solve difficulties encountered in theory and practice of this field, with special emphasis on the issue of topic selection and methodology.

Participating units include: Institute for Research and Development (IRD), Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, Francophone University Agency (AUF), Priority Solidarity Fund for Social Sciences, French University Center (PUF) and University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU, Hanoi, jointly organizing this activity with the desire to join forces and share experiences to promote university training and research activities in Vietnam.
The first Doctoral Day in Social Sciences and Humanities had the theme: Mobility, Migration and the Invisible Sector. Delegates listened to presentations on “The Invisible Sector in Vietnam: Research Issues” (author Mireille Razafindrakoto - IRD); “Invisible Jobs in the Red River Delta: A Comparative Analysis of Urban and Rural Areas from the VHLSS2004 Public Opinion Survey” (author Nguyen Huu Chi - PhD student at University of Paris 13); “Urbanization of the Ho Chi Minh City periphery and changes in the lifestyle of the population, the case of Vinh Loc A - First Results” (author Truong Hoang Truong - PhD student at Univesité de Province); “The Art of Writing a Thesis” (authors Edith Jaillaradon - University of Lyon 2 and Dominique Roussillion - University of Toulouse 1); “Digital databases: benefits and uses” (author Vu Do Quynh - AUF).
