STANDARD UNIVERSITY-LEVEL TRAINING PROGRAM

JOURNALISM

PART I: GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE TRAINING PROGRAM

1. Some information about the training program

2. Training Objectives

The undergraduate journalism program trains graduates with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to work in the field of journalism and media; capable of fulfilling operational requirements in various forms of media in the digital age, in the context of international integration and globalization; and capable of researching and teaching on issues of journalism and media at higher education institutions and research facilities.

After completing the course, students will have the competence to work in press agencies, media organizations, political and social organizations, etc., and will be able to continue their studies at a higher level, accumulating experience to become leaders and experts in the field of journalism and media.3. Admission Information

In the national university entrance exams, candidates can take the exam in the following subject groups: A (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry), C (Literature, History, Geography), and D (Literature, Mathematics, Foreign Language).

PART II: LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM

1. Regarding knowledge

1.1. General knowledge within Vietnam National University, Hanoi

  • Students understand and apply the knowledge and methodology of Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought, possess a dialectical materialist worldview and philosophy of life, and have firm political awareness and class standpoint.

1.2. General knowledge by field

  • Students understand and demonstrate their awareness of the foundations of social sciences and humanities, particularly in the fields of political science, psychology, sociology, history, and economics.
  • Understanding the role of social sciences and humanities in social life, especially in the digital age, integration, and globalization.

1.3 General knowledge of the field

  • Students understand and are able to apply the theories and principles of communication, interpersonal communication, and mass media communication to communicate effectively through written, spoken, and other forms.
  • Understanding the fundamental and core issues of journalistic law and ethics in media work.

1.4. General knowledge of the field

  • Students will understand and analyze the role and strengths of mass media channels in society. They will also understand the different career fields and jobs within the media industry.
  • Understanding the operational model of media organizations and the roles and responsibilities of individuals within those organizations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of fundamental concepts and theories of mass communication (the role of journalism and media in social life, the basic functions of communication, principles of journalistic ethics, etc.) in order to become a professional communicator and journalist.

1.5. Industry and supplementary knowledge

  • Demonstrate awareness, understanding, and the ability to exercise the rights and responsibilities of journalists in society. Understand and recognize the social, legal, and ethical responsibilities of journalists – socio-political activists.
  • Understand the requirements for accuracy, fairness, and integrity in media activities and apply these requirements in journalistic work. Be able to recognize and apply the distinction between reality and subjective evaluations.
  • Understand the roles and relationships between individuals in the media production process.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking, creativity, and independence in evaluating and assessing news; ability to organize and present information in the form of articles across various media formats (print, radio, television, public relations, etc.).
  • Master the fundamental knowledge of the elements and principles in designing print media, websites, or building entire television and radio programs.

1.6. Internship and Graduation Knowledge

  • Understand the organizational structure and operational processes of a newspaper newsroom or media organization.
  • They are able to proficiently apply the knowledge and skills learned to professional practice under the guidance of journalists and media experts.
  • Initially, they are able to adapt to the high-pressure work environment of a newspaper newsroom. They can flexibly apply basic communication skills with sources, colleagues, and the editorial board. They are also able to initially collaborate with the production team/crew for journalistic programs/works.

  • Possessing basic skills in using new technical and technological tools in mass media communication, demonstrating adaptability in a multimedia and digital professional environment.
  • Possesses proficient skills in using video cameras, still cameras, audio recorders, etc., and basic information processing software.
  • Information gathering and evaluation skills
  • They are capable of collecting, evaluating, and analyzing information through methods such as interviews, observation, and the collection of original or secondary documents proficiently. They possess basic competence in independent information gathering and investigation, organizing independent interviews to collect, analyze, organize, and synthesize information (written, visual, and numerical) to support a particular topic.
  • Information processing and organization skills
  • Possesses proficient skills in processing and organizing information in various journalistic formats, for writing, publishing, and broadcasting on mass media (print, radio, television, online news).
  • Media editing skills
  • Possesses proficient editing skills for both one's own work and that of others across various journalistic formats and genres.
  • Skills in designing and producing journalistic publications and producing radio and television programs.
  • Possesses basic skills in designing and presenting media publications, or in creating radio and television programs.
  • Capable of working flexibly in various types of journalism, and in different journalistic genres.

  • They are capable of identifying, recognizing, critically analyzing, and expressing their opinions on current issues, as well as proposing and implementing solutions related to their professional field.

  • Understanding the organizational context and adapting to job requirements in different organizational models (newspaper offices, media companies, communications departments of government agencies, non-governmental organizations, businesses, schools, etc.).
  • Internal communication within an organization contributes to shaping organizational culture and fostering successful work within the organization.

2.1.7. Ability to apply knowledge and skills to practice

  • Learners possess the ability to flexibly and appropriately apply diverse knowledge and skills acquired during their studies and professional internships, and the ability to master the knowledge and skills in using technical tools in journalism.
  • Summarize the professional lessons learned from practical experience, comparing them with the knowledge acquired.

2.1.8. The ability to create, develop, and lead change in one's profession.

  • Capable of conducting research and making recommendations to improve the quality of journalistic and media activities.
  • Stay updated on and predict industry trends and master the use of technological devices in the digital age.

  • Understanding the process and stages of creating media content is crucial for coordinating with departments responsible for different areas of work.

4. Job positions that students can take on after graduation.

Journalism graduates are capable of working as reporters and editors at newspapers, magazines, news agencies, radio stations, and television stations; as researchers and lecturers at training and research institutions specializing in journalism and mass media; as functional officers in leadership and management agencies for press information; or in positions requiring a systematic and fundamental understanding of journalistic theory and professional skills. They can work as specialists in media companies, as communications staff, or in public relations (PR) roles. Journalism graduates also have a wide range of adaptability, enabling them to work in various organizations related to journalism and mass media, such as cultural and ideological agencies, social advocacy media organizations, general information departments of political and social organizations, companies, corporations, and economic and commercial enterprises. cases, domestic and foreign non-governmental organizations...
