Sumitomo Foundation's grant program in 2018

On June 12, 2018, Mr. Kenichi Hamaya, representative of the Sumitomo Foundation (Japan), presented the Foundation's 2018 funding program for the Social Sciences and Humanities. Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim, Party Secretary and Vice Rector, attended and delivered a speech at the event.

The maximum funding for each research project is USD 10,000 (2,000,000 yen). Applications must be recommended by a reputable scientist with expertise in the relevant field. The evaluation committee consists of renowned scientists from Vietnam and Japan, with criteria that are fair, objective, and transparent.

Professor Nguyen Van Kim (Vice Rector of the University) shared his experience and encouraged faculty members to submit applications.

Professor Nguyen Van Kim assessed the Sumitomo Foundation as one of Japan's most prestigious research funding foundations, known for its high academic standards and professional working methods. Professor Nguyen Van Kim shared some experiences when applying for funding from the Foundation. Accordingly, the research subject needs to have strong connections with Japan, and the application should clearly demonstrate a research orientation and scientific thinking.

Associate Professor Hoang Anh Thi, Deputy Director of the Center for Vietnamese Language and Culture, shared: "The implementation of surveys and fieldwork in Japan and Vietnam... are factors that the Foundation provides all possible support for."

The Sumitomo Foundation was established in 1991 by the Sumitomo Group of Japan. Its goal is to contribute to social improvement through scientific research. The Foundation funds projects and research that help identify and address challenging societal issues. In Vietnam, the Foundation has played an active role in promoting scientific research, international publications, and acting as a bridge for academic exchange between Vietnamese and Japanese scientists, as well as fostering friendly relations between the two countries. From 1991 to the present, Vietnam has had 131 successful applications that received funding from the Foundation. In the last five years, there have been between 3 and 10 successful applications each year. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities alone has had many staff members receive support from the Foundation.

During the meeting, Mr. Koichi Ishizuka provided detailed information on the 2017 funding program, registration procedures, and specific deadlines for submitting applications for each category in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities (details can be found on the fund's website at:http://www.sumitomo.or.jp/e/index.htmAccordingly, research projects eligible for funding from the fund must focus on research related to Japan, comparative studies between Vietnam and Japan, etc.
