Professor and People's Teacher Phan Huy Le has passed away.

Professor Phan Huy Lê was born in 1934 in Ha Tinh province. He graduated from Hanoi Pedagogical University in 1956, specializing in ancient and medieval Vietnamese history. He was recognized as a Professor in 1980. He was awarded the title of Excellent Teacher in 1988 and the title of People's Teacher in 1994.

Professor Phan Huy Le was honored to receive the Kukuoka Asian Culture International Prize in Japan in 1996; the Order of the Academic Palms from the French Government in 2002; and the title of Foreign Corresponding Member of the Academy of Inscriptions and Fine Arts of the French Academy in 2011.

He worked at Hanoi University, later the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, from 1956 to 2004. His units were the Faculty of History and the Faculty of Oriental Studies. He held management positions: Head of the Department of Ancient and Medieval Vietnamese History, Faculty of History; Head of the Faculty of Oriental Studies (1993-2000). He has also been the President of the Vietnam Historical Science Association from 1988 to the present.

Professor Phan Huy Le's main research areas are: History of resistance against foreign invasion, History and cultural history of Vietnam, and Socio-economic history of Vietnam.
