On December 16, 2012, the 3rd International Conference on "Research and Teaching of Vietnamese and Chinese Language and Culture" was held at Guangxi Nationalities University, Nanning City, China.This is a biennial scientific conference jointly organized alternately by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) and Guangxi University for Nationalities. The delegation from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Duc Nghieu – Permanent Vice Rector – consists of 17 members, including many professors and associate professors such as: Prof. Dr. Dinh Van Duc (Head of the Department of Applied Linguistics), Prof. Dr. Tran Tri Doi (Head of the Department of Language and Culture of Ethnic Minorities), Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Hiep, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Thanh Lan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Chinh, young lecturers from the Faculty of Linguistics; and notably, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khang (Deputy Director of the Institute of Linguistics), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Tinh (Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Lexicography and Encyclopedias). On the Chinese side, in addition to scholars and researchers from Guangxi Nationalities University, there were also researchers and scholars from Guangxi University, Yunnan Normal University, Chongqing University, Guangdong University of Foreign Languages and Foreign Trade, etc. Professor Vu Ba and Associate Professor Vu Duc Nghieu, on behalf of the leaders of Guangxi Nationalities University and Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities, delivered the opening speeches of the conference. In the morning plenary session, the conference heard four reports: - Report by Professor Vi Thu Quan (Guangxi Nationalities University): “On the classification of Sino-Vietnamese words” - Report by Professor Dinh Van Duc (Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities): “Building a reference framework for Vietnamese communicative grammar” - Report by Professor Pham Hong Quy (Guangxi Nationalities University): “On cases of Sino-Vietnamese words being misunderstood and misspelled” - Report by Prof. Dr. Tran Tri Doi (Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities): "Language and Culture: An attempt to analyze the etymology in some Vietnamese folk songs and proverbs."
In the afternoon, three subcommittees were organized around three main themes: Subcommittee 1: Research issues on Vietnamese and Chinese languages; Subcommittee 2: Issues on teaching Vietnamese and Chinese languages; Subcommittee 3: Issues on Chinese culture, Vietnamese culture, and related matters. The discussions in the subcommittees were lively and open. Vietnamese delegates participated in presentations and discussions in all subcommittees, covering a wide range of topics, focusing on current issues in the research and teaching of Vietnamese and Chinese languages and cultures. The conference also heard many reports from Chinese scholars, especially from many young Chinese researchers, most of whom had studied Vietnamese in Vietnam. This conference was another opportunity for Vietnamese and Chinese researchers to meet, present their latest research findings, and discuss current scientific issues with their colleagues. The scientific content and organizational aspects of the conference were meticulously prepared, resulting in a highly positive outcome that was unanimously appreciated by the participating scientists. The 3rd International Conference on "Research and Teaching of Vietnamese and Chinese Languages and Cultures" was a great success. According to the planned schedule, the 4th International Conference on "Research and Teaching of Vietnamese and Chinese Languages and Cultures" will be held in 2013 at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
