On December 16, 2012, the 3rd International Conference on “Research and Teaching of Vietnamese and Chinese Language and Culture” was held at Guangxi University for Nationalities, Nanning City, China.This is a biennial scientific conference jointly organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) and Guangxi University of Nationalities. The delegation of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, led by Associate Professor Dr. Vu Duc Nghieu - Permanent Vice President - has 17 members, including many professors and associate professors such as: Prof. Dr. Dinh Van Duc (Head of the Department of Applied Linguistics), Prof. Dr. Tran Tri Doi (Head of the Department of Ethnic Minority Languages and Cultures), Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Hiep, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Thanh Lan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Chinh, young lecturers in the Department of Linguistics; and especially Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khang (Deputy Director of the Institute of Linguistics), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Tinh (Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Lexicography and Encyclopedia) also participated. On the Chinese side, in addition to scholars and researchers from Guangxi University for Nationalities, there were also researchers and scholars from Guangxi University, Yunnan Normal University, Chongqing University, Guangdong University of Foreign Languages and Foreign Trade... Prof. Vu Ba and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Duc Nghieu, on behalf of the leaders of Guangxi University for Nationalities and Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities, delivered opening speeches at the conference. In the plenary session in the morning, the conference heard 4 reports: - Report by Prof. Dr. Vi Thu Quan (Guangxi University for Nationalities): "On the classification of Sino-Vietnamese words" - Report by Prof. Dr. Dinh Van Duc (Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities): "Building a reference framework for Vietnamese communication grammar". - Report by Prof. Pham Hong Quy (Guangxi University for Nationalities): "On cases where Sino-Vietnamese words are misunderstood and misspelled". - Report by Professor Tran Tri Doi (Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities): "Language and culture: an attempt to analyze the etymology of some Vietnamese folk songs and proverbs".

In the afternoon, three subcommittees were organized according to three main topics: Subcommittee 1: Research issues on Vietnamese and Chinese language Subcommittee 2: Teaching issues on Vietnamese and Chinese language Subcommittee 3: Issues on Chinese culture, Vietnamese culture and related issues. The discussion atmosphere at the subcommittees was very lively and open. Vietnamese delegates participated in presentations and discussions at all subcommittees, with quite diverse topics, focusing on current issues in research and teaching of Vietnamese and Chinese language and culture. The conference also heard many reports from Chinese scholars, especially many young Chinese researchers, most of whom had spent time studying Vietnamese in Vietnam. This conference is another opportunity for Vietnamese and Chinese researchers to meet, present their latest research results, and discuss with colleagues about current scientific issues. The scientific content and organization of the conference were carefully prepared, so the conference results were highly appreciated by scientists. The 3rd International Conference on “Research and Teaching of Vietnamese-Chinese Language and Culture” was a great success. According to the plan, the 4th International Conference on “Research and Teaching of Vietnamese-Chinese Language and Culture” will be held in 2013 at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
