On October 17, 2018, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Viet Nghia (Head of Cooperation and Development Department) received and worked with Prof. Dr. Gabor Vargyas (Head of PhD training program, University of Pecs, Republic of Hungary; senior expert, Hungarian Academy of Sciences).

Famous Anthropologist Gabor Vargyas visits University of Social Sciences and Humanities

At the meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation activities within the framework of Vietnam - Hungary cooperation in recent times. Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Viet Nghia shared the achievements that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has achieved as well as the challenges and opportunities that the University faces in the current context of internationalization. Prof. Gabor Vargyas highly appreciated the achievements of the University in its role as Vietnam's leading training center in social sciences and humanities. He promised to pay maximum attention, both materially and spiritually, to the development and internationalization goals of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Prof. Dr. Gabor Vargyas is a famous scientist in Europe with in-depth research works on ethnic minorities in Vietnam. He is fluent in English, French, German and Bru. Together with Prof. George Condominas (Republic of France), he is one of two outstanding field anthropologists who have conducted in-depth fieldwork for many years in the Truong Son - Tay Nguyen mountains. Hundreds of his scientific works have been published in English, German, French and Hungarian over the past 30 years.

On the occasion of this visit to Vietnam, his first book was published in Vietnamese, titledDefying Fate: Culture and Customs of the Bru-Van Kieu People, Dan Tri Publishing House & Dong Tay Bookstore published October 2018. October 17, 2018, Workshop "Rice, the Rice Goddess and the Sickle: Bru Country in the 1980s (Quang Tri)"Co-organized by the French Cultural Center in Hanoi - L'Espace, the École française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO) and the Hungarian Embassy. From 12/10/2018 to 31/1/2019 at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, the photo exhibition "Gods, Ancestors and Shamans” is more than 70 unique ethnographic photos selected from thousands of photos he has taken over the past 30 years.
