Stress in studying and how to cope

Monday - May 28, 2018 03:56
Within the framework of the 23rd Student Scientific Research Conference of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, academic year 2017-2018, the topic "Coping with learning stress in students" by the group of students Nguyen Ngoc Quang and Nguyen Linh Chi (K60 Psychology) was one of 24 highly appreciated First Prize winning works.

The group of authors presented the report ""Coping with academic stress in students""

Academic stress is quite common among students.

One of the two authors of the project, student Nguyen Ngoc Quang, shared the reason for doing this topic: “In Vietnam, finding a study on academic stress in students is difficult, finding a study focusing on coping with academic stress is even more difficult. Meanwhile, academic stress is an eternal problem and the way students cope with it is very important.”

The above research was conducted based on the Stress Interaction Theory to find out the sources of stress in students' learning. Through a survey of 157 students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the group of authors identified 12 sources of stress in learning. Of which, 50% of students chose common sources of stress as: learning results, tests, assessments, volume and difficulty of assignments. According to this survey, the difficulty in adapting to the university environment is a typical source of stress for first-year students. Specifically, it is not being able to adapt to the learning organization method, teaching method or final exam review method... For third-year and fourth-year students - the group of students focusing on studying specialized subjects, the lack of rich and quality materials to serve the writing of essays or research can cause stress for students.

The study also noted a high proportion of students who were proactive and positive in coping with stress in their studies. These coping strategies included: regulating temporary emotions, accepting reality, having positive thoughts and having strategies to change themselves. Students in the above positive group had low levels of stress. Based on the relationship with learning motivation, these students knew how to cope with problem-solving strategies to achieve higher learning outcomes. In contrast, students who avoided problem solving had higher levels of stress and lower learning outcomes.

Stress is not just a student problem.

The group of authors Nguyen Ngoc Quang and Nguyen Linh Chi also raised the question: Is study stress just a student's story?

The group hopes that the results of their research will be reference information for building appropriate training programs for each student group. The important thing is that based on the specific duration and workload that each student must do when participating in a subject, the management department can predict and build a suitable, suitable and timely study program. This helps avoid the situation of too many assignments and exams in the same period of time, which can easily lead to stress.

In addition, intervention programs, extracurricular activities, and skills enhancement for students need to focus on helping students develop skills to cope with stress, maintain positive thinking, be ready to change their perceptions, accept reality, and regulate their personal emotions. In addition, the School also needs to provide the necessary resources for students to develop their problem-solving skills. In particular, for first-year students, the Youth Union and Student Association organizations in the School have been trying to build programs to help them improve their learning capacity and access effective university-level learning methods.

The above scientific research work was evaluated by the teachers in the evaluation board as quite methodical with clear and professional citations, good research hypothesis, and good data processing. It is known that this topic was cherished by Ngoc Quang since he was a first-year student and was completed at the present time with the cooperation of Linh Chi. In addition to the advantages of effective teamwork, when talking about the difficulties in the process of implementing the topic, Linh Chi said that finding and reading and understanding foreign language sources is still a limitation of the group.

The topic “Coping with academic stress in students” also won the award in the category “Excellent applied research” of the Green Torch Award – an award for scientific research projects by students on practical issues for students and with application. Sharing about this, the group of authors said that science must serve the purpose of improving the quality of human life, if this research can contribute something to that purpose, then that is the goal that the group of authors is aiming for.
