Seminar “100 Years of the Russian October Revolution and Real Socialism - Historical Value and Contemporary Significance”

On the morning of October 31, 2017, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and the Central Theoretical Council, organized a scientific seminar entitled "100 Years of the Russian October Revolution and Real Socialism – Historical Value and Contemporary Significance".

Attending the seminar were Prof. Dr. Ta Ngoc Tan (former member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council), Dr. Nguyen Van Hung (Deputy Head of the Central Committee for Mass Mobilization), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ngo Dinh Xay (Director of the Department of Political Theory, Central Propaganda Department of the Communist Party of Vietnam), Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Luong (Secretary of the Central Committee of the Youth Union), Ms. Shafinskia Natalia Valerievna (Director of the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Hanoi), Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Tung (Director of the Institute of Vietnamese Studies and Development Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi), and Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim (Secretary of the Party Committee, Vice Rector of the University).

The seminar was also attended by representatives from central ministries, departments, and organizations, scientists, media outlets, and more than 100 students from universities such as the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi University, the Diplomatic Academy, the Academy of Journalism and Communication, and Russian students studying in Vietnam.

The moderators of the seminar (from left to right) included: Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim (Secretary of the Party Committee, Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities); Prof. Dr. Ta Ngoc Tan (former Member of the Central Committee of the Party, Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council), and Comrade Nguyen Ngoc Luong (Secretary of the Central Committee of the Youth Union).

In his opening remarks, Professor Nguyen Van Kim highlighted the profound significance and far-reaching international nature of the Russian October Revolution. This was an opportunity to affirm the stature and historical value of the Russian October Revolution and the immense contributions of real socialism to human history. From there, scientists re-evaluated the historical experiences and lessons, the successes and limitations of real socialism and the Soviet state model. These studies are necessary to derive new laws and methods of development that are rapid, sustainable, and in line with the trends of the times, achieving the fundamental goals set by the Party and State of Vietnam to quickly transform the country into an industrialized nation in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, Professor Nguyen Van Kim expressed his belief that through this seminar, the younger generation will gain a deeper understanding of the values ​​and noble goals of the October Revolution. Students will have their faith strengthened in the ideals of life and the profound, scientific philosophies of human existence put forth by the founders of scientific socialism, Marx and Engels, and later developed by Lenin, President Ho Chi Minh, and many other patriots and revolutionaries.

Comrade Nguyen Ngoc Luong (Secretary of the Central Committee of the Youth Union) presented the introductory report for the seminar, outlining three main topics for discussion: the significance, historical value, and contemporary relevance of the Russian October Revolution to the world revolutionary movement and the Vietnamese revolution; the historical significance of the Russian October Revolution and the application of Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought to the path of national liberation and socialist development in Vietnam today, particularly focusing on clarifying the achievements, opportunities, challenges, and lessons learned by Vietnam after more than 30 years of reform; and the significance of the Russian October Revolution for the political awareness, revolutionary ideals, and the process of training, striving, studying, and contributing of young people and students in the present era.

In her speech, Ms. Shafinskia Natalia Valerievna (Director of the Russian Science and Culture Center in Hanoi) assessed:Despite all the diverse opinions and assessments of the events of 100 years ago in Russia, no one can deny that, as a result of the October Revolution, world history had to change its trajectory."

Typical presentations included:Theoretical and cognitive errors led to the collapse of the model of real socialism in the Soviet Union.(Prof. Dr. Ta Ngoc Tan - former Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council)"The significance and importance of the Russian October Revolution and the valuable lessons learned from it regarding the mobilization of the masses to follow the revolutionary path of VI Lenin will forever shine brightly in the mass mobilization work of the Communist Party of Vietnam."(Deputy Head of the Central Committee's Mass Mobilization Department)Learn about Ho Chi Minh through the lessons of the Russian October Revolution.(Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nghiem Dinh Vy)The Russian October Revolution of 1917 and the current Vietnamese youth movement.(Dr. Tran Bach Hieu - Secretary of the Youth Union of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi)… In addition, the seminar also recorded the opinions of students from many universities, assessing the significance and historical value of the October Revolution for the process of renovation and international integration, and for the political awareness and ideals of Vietnamese students….

Professor Ta Ngoc Tan, on behalf of the Presidium, summarized the program of the Seminar.

Concluding the seminar, Professor Ta Ngoc Tan emphasized: “We can summarize the great significance of the Russian October Revolution in three ways. Firstly, the Revolution created a unique social system unprecedented in history, a social system that has been the dream of all progressive humanity: Socialism. Secondly, it opened a path to the liberation of oppressed nations worldwide. Thirdly, it promoted the struggle for democracy, freedom, and food for working people in capitalist countries. Today's seminar has contributed to spreading these meanings, helping the younger generation broaden their scope of knowledge. This knowledge is not only about the October Revolution, but also about other issues in the history of our nation.”

Comrade Nguyen Ngoc Luong (Secretary of the Central Committee of the Youth Union) presented flowers to Professor Dr. Ta Ngoc Tan, Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim, and Ms. Shafinskia Natalia Valerievna.
