11. Summary of new results of the thesis:

  • The thesis has surveyed and collected a large number of documents on modern Vietnamese poetry and poetry by Western authors, mainly French poetry. The system of documents used for the summary work is relatively broad and selective, consistent with the spirit of the thesis.
    • - The thesis has presented the typical manifestations of the theory and creative practice of symbolism and surrealism, showing the influence of this trend on modern Vietnamese poetry in order to clarify the role, contribution and limitations. At the same time, it compares the level of influence between different stages and consciously explains based on the historical context of the nation, the era, the status and psychology, and the personality of the individual.
    • - The thesis has applied the theory of surreal symbolism, typology, and case study theory to study typical phenomena in the symbolic and surrealist trends of Vietnamese literature.
    • - The thesis succeeds in specifically and deeply analyzing the writing style combined with the ability to perceive poetry to have accurate assessments of the artistic style of some typical authors.

  • The practical value of the topic is that it can be directly applied to teaching and research at universities and colleges in Vietnam.

Based on the research on the traces of symbolism and surrealism in modern Vietnamese poetry, it is possible to continue to conduct extensive comparative studies on other trends and movements in Vietnamese literature. Or search for and examine more documents to connect with the literature of many other countries in the Asian region, comparing the level of influence from these modernisms.

  • The thesis examines and collates comprehensive literature on modern Vietnamese poetry and Western poetry, mainly French poetry. The literature review was extensive and selective to be in line with the spirit of the thesis.
    • The thesis has shed light on the characteristics of symbolism, in terms of both theory and creative practice, thus demonstrating the influence of symbolism on Vietnamese poetry, and indicating the roles, contribution and drawbacks of symbolism. The influence was also studied by conducting comparative analysis throughout periods, and attempting to justify symbolism based on the contexts of national history, the era, destiny and psychology, and personal traits.
    • The thesis utilizes the theory on surrealist symbolism, typology, case studies to examine the typical paradigms of surrealism and symbolism in Vietnamese literature.
    • The thesis gives a detailed and in-depth analysis of the creative manner in tandem with the capability of poetry perception, in order to make relevant judgments on art styles of typical authors.

  • The thesis can be applicable in teaching and research in universities and colleges in Vietnam.

13. Further research suggestions

Based on the research on the influence of symbolism and surrealism in modern Vietnamese poetry, further comparative studies can be conducted to shed light on the influence of other trends and movements on Vietnamese literature. Another research suggestion can be conducting a similar studies on the influence of those kinds of modernism on the literature of other Asian countries.
