3. Main results and conclusions
3.1. Main results
- Overview of previous research works to obtain a relatively complete and valuable source of theoretical and practical reference information for research on the conditions for the emergence of rumors, channels of diffusion and rumor transmission activities.
- Present theoretical basis, research methods and overview of research area.
- Analyze the current status of receiving and discussing the content of rumors.
- Analyze the source of information that affects the process of receiving and transmitting rumors.
- Analyze the mechanism of formation and spread of rumors in semi-public spaces to see the complexity compared to this mechanism taking place in private and public spaces.
-The proliferation of rumors in semi-public spaces has created a tendency to spread rumors, causing panic and reducing faith in good things in life among those who transmit and receive rumors.
3.2. Conclusion
- The reality of information reception shows that the public tends to assume that all information heard/read is news. In particular, the public discusses information mainly in the categories of hard news and soft news, however, interest in specific information fields depends greatly on demographic characteristics such as gender, education level, and occupation of the person transmitting and receiving the rumor.
- The mechanism of rumor formation is often expressed through the form of rumor reception, the origin of rumor and social mood. In which, the origin of rumor shows that the public receives information mainly from mass media and social media channels to discuss topics related to rumors rather than interpersonal channels.
- The path and mechanism of spreading rumors in semi-public spaces are often quite complicated, interwoven and more difficult to control than in public and private spaces. In semi-public spaces, the transmission of rumors is often emphasized by the mechanism of increasing scale, content and severity rather than the mechanism of reducing. The support of media channels has helped the process of transmitting rumors become more complete and faster.
- Rumors are based on subjective emotions, so they are spontaneous and spread very quickly when the public knows the information. When reading a lot of inaccurate information or information without clear conclusions, it also leads to personal psychology becoming confused, worried, losing faith in society and spreading more rumors.

3.2. Conclusions
- Our data shows that most of our survey participants often naively think of every information as being news-worthy. Their news can be categorized as hard news and soft news, but the exact preference depends heavily on their social attributes like gender, diploma degree, occupation,et al.
- Rumors are often conceived through rumor receiving, rumor origin and social mood. In particular, the rumor origin theory shows that people often receive information from mass media and social media rather than private communication.
- It is relatively harder to trace how rumors are diffused in semi-public space. In such spaces, rumors are often emphasized in terms of impact, detail, and seriousness, rather than downplayed. The media plays an important role in diffusing rumors quickly and fully.
- Rumors are partly based on individual emotions, which facilitates its inception and diffusion. When being overloaded with uncertain information, people will find themselves in confusion, anxiety, and hopelessness, and therefore clinging more on rumors.
