- Research purpose: The thesis analyzes the process of forming the comprehensive partnership between ASEAN and the Russian Federation; analyzes the impacts and influences on this comprehensive partnership, in order to explain the movements and development trends in the ASEAN - Russian Federation relationship in the period 1996-2016.

- Research object: Comprehensive partnership between ASEAN - Russian Federation (1996-2016).

2. Research methods used

To conduct this study, the author used the following main methods: Historical method, level analysis approach, policy analysis method, benefit analysis method, multidisciplinary-interdisciplinary approach.

3. Main results and conclusions

3.1. Main results

- Research the development process of the ASEAN - Russian Federation comprehensive partnership in the fields of politics, diplomacy, economics, security, science and technology, and cooperation in the Southeast Asian region from 1996 to 2016.

- Provide theoretical and practical basis for the comprehensive partnership between ASEAN and the Russian Federation.

- Deeper understanding of the ASEAN - Russian Federation relationship and the multi-dimensional impacts of this relationship on each country's entity in the ASEAN organization with the Russian Federation as well as the general situation of the Southeast Asian region.

- Assess the relationship between countries in the Southeast Asian region with major powers including the Russian Federation.

- Point out the achievements and limitations of ASEAN - Russian Federation relations, thereby determining its role in the development of ASEAN - Vietnam relations in regional international relations and in Vietnam - Russian Federation relations.

3.2. Conclusion

- Some achievements in 20 years of establishing ASEAN - Russian Federation partnership and this cooperation is deep and extensive in many fields.

- The Russian Federation's outreach to ASEAN and ASEAN countries is part of its pivot to Asia policy announced in 2016.

- ASEAN is a large market for machine-building products, aerospace technology, oil and gas exploitation equipment; a large arms export market for the Russian Federation and can open the way for expanding cooperation in mixed industries.

- Regarding the orientation of the partnership in the coming time, ASEAN and the Russian Federation still have a lot of potential for cooperation such as: trade and investment, connectivity, infrastructure development, tourism, energy, education - training...
