10. Summary of the thesis results: This thesis focuses on surveying and analyzing the means of expressing semantic modality in Portuguese articles on health topics and comparing them with Vietnamese. The results show that both languages use means at the word and sentence levels, with modal verbs playing a central role. Semantically, the four main values—obligation, permission, prohibition, and exemption—are all expressed, with the obligatory meaning predominating. The means in Portuguese are direct and objective; while in Vietnamese they are indirect and flexible, due to typological and cultural differences in communication.
11. Practical applications: The research findings can be applied to teaching Portuguese as a foreign language, helping learners identify and correctly use means of expressing obligations and recommendations; and supporting translation activities, especially in the medical field – a field that demands high accuracy and nuance of expression. In addition, the research provides a useful reference for compiling bilingual documents and analyzing specialized discourse.

Future Research Directions: We hope to expand the scope of our research to other types of discourse or delve deeper into pragmatic analysis to further clarify the role of semantic modality in diverse communication situations, cultures, and the perception of semantic modality. Additionally, further research into the strategies of modality shift between two languages is also a potential direction, contributing to improved translation quality and intercultural communication.

Summary of the findings of the thesis: The thesis focuses on investigating and analyzing the means of expressing deontic modality in Portuguese in some articles on health topics, in contrast with Vietnamese. The findings show that both languages employ means at the lexical and sentential levels, among which modal verbs play a central role. Semantically, the four main values, namely obligation, permission, prohibition and exemption, are all expressed, with obligation being the dominant value. Portuguese tends to express deontic modality in a direct and objective manner, whereas Vietnamese tends to employ more indirect and flexible forms of expression, due to typological differences and differences in communicative culture.
