This thesis surveys, compiles statistics, and analyzes the system of modal particles in several representative works by Tô Hoài from a pragmatic perspective. Based on the application of theories of linguistic behavior, communicative context, and interpersonal functions in language, the thesis clarifies the characteristics of usage and the expressive value of modal particles in the writer's artistic language.

The research results show that modal particles appear frequently and in diverse forms and functions in the works surveyed.
