Firstly, the thesis has outlined the general education situation in Vietnam before the renovation. Regarding the school system, Vietnam had just emerged from the war, many schools were destroyed, and there were still many makeshift classrooms made of leaves. The student population after Vietnam's liberation was increasingly expanded. In the first school year after the country's reunification in 1975-1976, the student population in the whole country was 7,404,000 children studying at primary school, accounting for 15.54% of the population. But by 1984-1985, the whole country had about 8,166,372 students, accounting for about 13.69% of the population. The quality of general education has changed a lot. However, the rate of students repeating grades and dropping out of school is still high. This requires the education sector to have innovations to meet the requirements of society in the new period.

Second, the thesis analyzed the development process of general education in Vietnam from 1986 to 2000. The scale of schools in the period of 1986 - 2000 was constantly expanded, many new school systems were built and solidified. In the 1986 - 1987 school year, the total number of general schools nationwide was 13,671 schools with 343,770 classrooms. The number of classrooms increased rapidly in 1999 - 2000, reaching 327,113 classrooms. Of which, the number of grade 4 and above classrooms was 273,083, accounting for 83.5%. Regarding the content of the general education program in the new period, there was more diversity in the subjects of civic education, physical education, and social subjects that schools paid more attention to in teaching. The student population grew, the proportion of female students and children of ethnic minorities was increasingly high. The quality of education has improved significantly.

Third, through analysis and research, the thesis has pointed out the achievements and limitations of Vietnamese general education from 1986 to 2000 in both quality and quantity.
