Regarding the school system, Vietnam had just emerged from war, with many school facilities destroyed and a large number of makeshift classrooms made of leaves still remaining. The number of students after Vietnam's liberation expanded significantly. In the first school year after national reunification (1975-1976), the number of students nationwide was 7,404,000 children attending primary school, accounting for 15.54% of the population. However, by 1984-1985, the number had increased to approximately 8,166,372 students, representing about 13.69% of the population. The quality of general education has undergone many changes. Nevertheless, the rate of students repeating grades and dropping out remains high. This necessitates reforms in the education sector to meet the demands of society in the new era.
Secondly, the thesis analyzed the development process of Vietnamese general education from 1986 to 2000. The scale of schools and classrooms expanded continuously during the period 1986-2000, with many new and reinforced school systems being built. In the 1986-1987 school year, the total number of general education schools nationwide was 13,671 with 343,770 classrooms. The number of classrooms increased rapidly in 1999-2000, reaching 327,113. Of these, 273,083 classrooms were of level 4 or higher, accounting for 83.5%. Regarding the content of the general education curriculum in the new period, it became more diverse, with schools paying more attention to subjects like civics, physical education, and social sciences. The student population also increased, with a higher proportion of female students and children from ethnic minorities. The quality of education has improved significantly.
Thirdly, through analysis and research, the thesis has identified the achievements and limitations of Vietnamese general education from 1986 to 2000, in terms of both quality and quantity.
