7. Thesis title: The tone system of Kim Thuong Muong: an experimental study of fundamental frequency, duration, and phonation type.
8. Major: Linguistics Code: 60.22.02.40
9. Scientific supervisor:Dr. Alexis MichaudMICA International Research Institute (CNRS – Hanoi University of Science and Technology), Vietnam.
10. Summary of the thesis results:
This thesis is a case study of the Muong Kim Thuong dialect (Phu Tho, Vietnam) using distribution analysis, a classical method in field linguistics, to conclude that the dialect has a tonal system comprising five primary tones in loose syllables along with two secondary tones in tight syllables. This is the target of experimental phonological research. The recorded audio and globus wave data allowed for accurate calculation of fundamental frequencies as well as prediction of globus opening, a reliable parameter providing information about the articulation pattern.
11. Practical applications:
This study aims to overcome the challenges associated with quantitative research on laryngogenesis, thereby providing a suggestion on how to model indices of fundamental frequency, duration, and sound production patterns.
12. Published works related to the thesis: None

7. Official thesis title: The tone system of Kim Thuong Muong: an experimental study of fundamental frequency, duration, and phonation type.
8. Major: Linguistics Code: 60.22.02.40
9. Supervisors: Dr. Alexis Michaud, International Research Institute MICA (CNRS – Hanoi University of Science and Technology – Grenoble INP), Vietnam.
10. Summary of the findings of the thesis:
This is a study of the tone system of the Muong dialect of Kim Thuong (province of Phu Tho, Vietnam). Distributional analysis – a classical procedure in linguistic fieldwork - Brings out five tones on smooth syllables, and two tones on stopped syllables. These tones form the topic of an experimental phonetic study. Audio and electroglottographic recordings allow for the measurement of fundamental frequency and for an estimation of the glottal open quotient, a parameter that offers indications on phonation type.
11. Practical applicability, if any:
The study addresses challenges linked to the quantitative study of glottalization, in order to propose a detailed picture of how tones pattern in terms of fundamental frequency, duration, and phonation types.
12. Thesis-related publications: None
