ThroughAncient meaning of the AnalectsItō Jinsai demonstrated a relatively unique system of Confucian thought. Regarding "morality and self-cultivation," it emphasizes the practice of "benevolence" (Ren), adherence to "propriety" (Li), striving towards the model of "gentleman," while also focusing on "methods of self-cultivation" suitable for each individual. Regarding "politics," it is expressed through the emphasis on "rectification of names" and the practice of "royal conduct." Regarding "learning," it emphasizes the "spirit of learning" and "methods of learning," valuing continuous training and the ability to self-improve one's character.

11. Summary of the findings of the thesis:

Itō Jinsai伊藤仁齋was a Confucian scholar of Edo-period Japan who abandoned Zhu Xi orthodoxy in favor of what he considered as the “Ancient Meaning” (Kogigaku). He placed absolute emphasis on theAnalectsand theMencius, founded the Kogigaku school, and contributed to weakening the dominant position of Zhu Xi Learning in Japan. He also compiled theRongo-kogi 論語古義with the aim of annotating and restoring the original meaning of theAnalects.

This thesis utilizes as its primary source the Bunsei 12 (1829) edition of theRongo-kogicurrently preserved in the Waseda University Library, Japan under the call number12 03105, consisting of four volumes.

Through theRongo-kogi, Jinsai articulates a distinctive Confucian intellectual system.Asking the"KnifeWay, he situates it within ordinary human relations and everyday life (the Way in common practice), rather than separating it from lived reality. In terms of “Morality and Self-cultivation,” he emphasizes the practice of"Ren(Benevolence), adherence to"Li(Propriety), and the ideal of the “Junzi” (Gentleman), while also stressing individualized methods of self-cultivation. His"mentalthought highlights the importance of"Zhengming" (the Rectification of Names)and"Wang dao(Kingly Way). In"Lwinning, he emphasizes both the spirit and methods of learning, valuing continuous self-discipline and the individual's capacity for moral self-perfection.
