Complete the key objectives for 2024.

Speaking at the meeting, Rector Hoang Anh Tuan happily shared: “The university concluded 2024 with many positive results. We basically completed the set targets, with some exceeding the plan assigned by Hanoi National University. Training has made significant breakthroughs, especially in the innovation and restructuring of training programs. Besides opening new training programs to meet practical needs, the university has streamlined postgraduate training programs, and has now completed 28 Bachelor's programs, 36 Master's programs, and 31 Doctoral programs. Enrollment has steadily increased over the years (reaching 2,300 students in 2024), and the quality of incoming students has improved. We are actively innovating postgraduate training towards formalization, systematic management, and centralized control. Facing the pressure of autonomy and fierce competition, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities still adheres to the principle of not enrolling or training indiscriminately.” Instead of chasing quantity, prioritize quality as the philosophy and guiding principle for all activities.
Regarding scientific research, in addition to carrying out regular tasks, in 2024 the University will focus on implementing two key programs: building a series of publications on social sciences and humanities (currently, units have registered more than 80 works to be published) and compiling 40 sets of national standard textbooks. In 2024, the University will strengthen its implementation and effective cooperation with localities in scientific tasks: compiling the geographical gazettes of Ninh Thuan, Quang Minh, Ninh Binh, Nam Dinh, etc., fulfilling its national responsibility in researching and advising on socio-economic development policies for localities. The University is also developing a project for a Center for Vietnamese Documentation and Heritage Abroad, and has so far collected approximately 50,000 pages of rare handwritten documents in ancient languages such as Latin, Spanish, Dutch, English, and French. It has attracted experts in ancient Latin and French languages and is collaborating with the Indian Embassy in Hanoi to train two experts in ancient Pali and ancient Sanskrit.
In the final days of 2024 and the beginning of 2025, the University quickly finalized the plan for reorganizing and streamlining its organizational structure to improve efficiency and effectiveness in accordance with Resolution No. 18-NQ/TW and the directives of Hanoi National University. The number of organizational units has been reduced from 46 to 32, representing a 30.4% reduction.
Several major changes were implemented, including: merging two training units, the Faculty of Anthropology and the Department of Religious Studies, into one; consolidating units with similar functions and ceasing operations; and transferring the functions and responsibilities of some units to align with training objectives and directly support training programs, ensuring consistency with the university's long-term development strategy. In the next phase, the university will continue to review and restructure to ensure a lean, strong, and efficient organizational structure with approximately 25 departments.
Administrative work has also been drastically reformed towards professionalism, friendliness, and efficiency. Facilities and workspaces for lecturers and students have been renovated and upgraded to be more spacious, modern, convenient, and to expand learning, self-study, and relaxation spaces for students.
On behalf of the University's leadership and all faculty, staff, and students, Rector Hoang Anh Tuan expressed his deepest gratitude for the dedication, intellect, and enthusiasm of the professors and lecturers to the building and development of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities over the past decades. Although they are no longer involved in management, they continue to support, contribute ideas, and provide valuable guidance to the current Board of Directors, while also readily participating in the University's training and scientific research activities. This is not only a source of encouragement but also an invaluable resource and asset, contributing to the increasingly strong brand of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Sharing his thoughts on the difficulties and challenges the University will face in the next phase, especially the pressure of autonomy and the current strong digital transformation context, Professor Nguyen Van Khanh (former Rector of the University) expressed his wish: “No matter how difficult the circumstances, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities must maintain its mission as a leading institution in training high-quality, highly skilled human resources in social sciences and humanities. It must continue to promote its unique, distinctive, and characteristic values, maintain and develop basic science disciplines, and even if it expands to applied disciplines, it must still be based on basic science. This is not only about building a brand in training but also about national responsibility and responsibility to the country's science sector.” Of course, this must be harmonized with meeting the practical needs of the current labor market, the requirements of growth and increased income to retain talented and highly skilled staff.
Acknowledging the outstanding efforts of the school's leadership, faculty, and staff, Professor Nguyen Van Khanh expressed his delight at seeing the school becoming more spacious and modern each time he visits; the organizational structure is stable and operates very effectively; the staff are united and enthusiastic in their work; and all aspects of activities have achieved very encouraging results. “With the intellect, dedication, and creativity of the leadership team and the contributions of the entire faculty and staff, I am confident that the school's plan for 2025 will be successfully implemented. In particular, I hope the school will focus on investing in training leading experts and scientists and developing the Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities into one of the leading prestigious scientific journals in Vietnam and reaching international standards. This is a unique advantage that not every educational institution possesses,” Professor Nguyen Van Khanh emphasized.
