On the morning of December 30, 2024, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH) held the opening ceremony for a training course themed "Breakthroughs with GEN AI in Teaching and Research". The course aims to equip faculty members with the necessary knowledge and skills to apply generative artificial intelligence (GEN AI) to teaching and scientific research.
GEN AI – A groundbreaking tool in teaching and research
In his opening remarks at the training course, Professor Hoang Anh Tuan, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, shared: GEN AI is one of the breakthroughs in artificial intelligence in recent years, not only optimizing teaching processes but also creating new opportunities in scientific research, expanding creativity and exploration in many fields of social sciences and humanities research. Modern AI tools such as ChatGPT, GPT-4, or other deep learning models will help lecturers easily build lectures, create learning materials, design intelligent tests, and support scientific research through more efficient and accurate analysis of big data and texts. "Digital transformation and technology application have been discussed for a long time, but not all educational institutions have taken concrete, substantive, and effective steps. Although not having a strong advantage in the technology field, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, with the support of Meta Group, became the first institution to develop and issue a Digital Competency Framework for students (at the end of 2023), which has been referenced by over 150 universities. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities has also made significant contributions to the Ministry of Education and Training in developing the Circular promulgating the Digital Competency Framework for learners in the national education system. In addition, the University has recently officially approved and put into use MOOCs (Mobile Open Online Courses) for the Basic Informatics course. The course is built on a modern technology platform, integrating multimedia elements such as high-definition video, vivid sound, and user-friendly interactive features, packaged according to the SCORM standard, ensuring smooth operation on learning management systems." (LMS) and high internet compatibility contribute to enhancing the sustainability of digital and personalized training deployment.”
Professor Hoang Anh Tuan (Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities) highly appreciated the significance of the training courses in enhancing the capacity of staff and lecturers.
Rector Hoang Anh Tuan expressed his hope that, with the dedication of the experts, the course organizers (with the Faculty of Information and Library Science as the coordinating body), and the enthusiastic and responsible participation of the lecturers, this training course will not only be an opportunity to learn, develop teaching and research capabilities, and publish internationally, but also an important step to help the University of Social Sciences and Humanities affirm its pioneering role in applying technology in higher education, while contributing to promoting the strong development of Vietnamese education in the digital age. Representing Meta Group, Mr. Ruici Tio, Asia Pacific Regional Program Manager for Safety and Integrity Policy, highly appreciated the pioneering and effective role of projects and programs implemented by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU-USSH) to enhance digital capabilities and the application of AI in teaching, learning, and research for faculty and students. Meta is committed to continuing its partnership with VNU-USSH in successfully implementing the AI Application Capacity Building Project as well as many specific programs to equip faculty and students with the necessary digital skills to adapt and improve work efficiency in the context of rapidly changing technology.
Mr. Ruici Tio, Program Manager for Safety and Integrity Policy in the Asia Pacific region of Meta Group, expressed his confidence that the course would be successfully organized and would bring very practical value to the faculty and students of the University.
The training course equips participants with the mindset and methods for using GEN AI creatively and responsibly.
That was the ultimate goal emphasized by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Van Hung (Head of the Information and Library Science Department, Co-leader of the AI Application Capacity Building Project implemented by VNU-USSH and Meta, and Head of the Training Course Organizing Committee) when sharing about the core content of the training course. “Organizing this training course not only helps lecturers and staff of the University gain fundamental knowledge about AI, but also provides an opportunity for us to keep up with technological trends, expand our creativity and innovation in teaching and research. In fact, GEN AI has proven its important role in optimizing learning and research processes, enabling researchers to find new and innovative solutions.”
Associate Professor Dr. Do Van Hung discussed the content, specific schedule, and some requirements for the successful organization of the course, emphasizing full participation. The staff and lecturers demonstrated enthusiasm and a high sense of responsibility.
The course is designed to include the following content:AI and its applications in higher education; Learning, creating, and teaching with AI; Building digital lectures with AI; Scientific research and international publications with AI; Using AI ethically and responsibly; AI working with students and classroom management. With the support of leading experts with practical experience in AI research and training for educational institutions and corporations both domestically and internationally.
“This is not a training course on how to use a typical software program, but rather on an incredibly intelligent application that changes daily and hourly. Therefore, instead of equipping participants with specific operations, the highest goal of the course is to equip them with the mindset, methods, and approaches to a new technology so that teachers and students can creatively and effectively apply it to their practical work. During the course, experts will design specific, personalized practical exercises so that by the end of the course, participants can grasp the most fundamental principles and how to turn AI into a truly effective tool,” emphasized Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Van Hung. According to the Organizing Committee, the training course received interest and registrations from 150 lecturers and over 600 students, not only from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities but also from several other universities within the Vietnam National University, Hanoi: the University of Law, and the University of Economics. After completing the 9 training sessions, participants will have the opportunity to receive commemorative gifts and certificates of completion from Meta Group. Among them, the 3 instructors and 3 students with the best results in the entire training course (with outstanding products) will receive special gifts from the Organizing Committee.
Immediately after the opening ceremony, the first class (lasting from December 30, 2024 to January 3, 2023) took place on the 7th floor of Building E at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities with the full participation of all registered students.
