Experience in training and consulting on sustainable entrepreneurship and start-ups for students in VietnamAccording to Dr. Mac Quoc Anh - Member of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, Director of the Institute of Economics and Enterprise Development, Secretary of the Party Committee/Vice Chairman/General Secretary of the Hanoi Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, former student of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, in the context of globalization and the 4.0 industrial revolution, the startup movement has become an inevitable trend in Vietnam, especially for young people and students.
Dr. Mac Quoc Anh gives a comprehensive picture of the student startup situation from 2010 to present and specific proposals and solutions.
Since 2010, the Government and organizations have set a goal of promoting startups to create job opportunities, reduce unemployment and create new products and services. In Hanoi, as the largest educational center in the country, universities have played an important role in promoting this movement. The number of student startup projects in Hanoi increased fivefold from 2010 to 2023. From only 100 projects in 2010, this number reached 500 projects in 2023. Student startup projects have attracted a total investment capital of more than 300 billion VND from investment funds, businesses and non-governmental organizations.
Forecasts from Hanoi National University show that the number of student start-up projects could grow by 10-15% per year, with a focus on technology, education and sustainable agriculture. The Government’s goal by 2030 is to have at least 10,000 student start-up projects, of which 50% will be large-scale and have a strong impact on the market.
However, Vietnamese students’ start-up activities are also facing many difficulties. These include financial difficulties (lack of investment capital, limited access to capital sources), lack of practical experience, lack of management and business skills; and lack of connection with investors and businesses.
Assoc.Prof.Dr. Truong Ngoc Kiem - Director of the Center for Knowledge Transfer and Startup Support, VNU, affirmed that in the national innovation system and startup ecosystem, universities are a very important element. Strong universities are a source of knowledge and technology production for society, providing abundant creative ideas for startup projects, contributing to the increase in assets and intellectual capacity of businesses.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Truong Ngoc Kiem - Director of the Center for Knowledge Transfer and Startup Support, VNU, Hanoi emphasized the important role of universities in students' startup journey.
Teaching, training and fostering to raise awareness and enhance capacity for learners have been of interest to universities and colleges to implement diverse content and forms to foster knowledge and skills, provide resources to support students to turn ideas into feasible business projects, bringing benefits to the community.
However, the compilation of the curriculum framework, content, time and training form has not been unified and there is no common standard, so sharing of lecturer resources, sharing of experiences, transferring of knowledge and mutual support in training and fostering activities on Innovative Startups of universities and colleges cannot be implemented.
Therefore, in the coming time, the Ministry of Education and Training, VNU, and higher education institutions need to perfect the system of policy mechanisms to consolidate trust, strengthen the organic and strong connection between universities and enterprises as well as strengthen the work of compiling the program framework, documents, textbooks, and learning materials on innovative startups so that the provision of knowledge and skills for students is of high quality, effective, and substantial.
Dr. Nguyen Thi Hai Ha - Lecturer, Head of Liberal Education Group, University of Economics, VNU presented a report assessing the current status of training and consulting on entrepreneurship and sustainable startups in Vietnam (in-depth research at universities in Hanoi)
The workshop received many contributions from experts, entrepreneurs and students to effectively implement the Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Startup Project not only at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities but also at many other universities in Vietnam.
