This was the topic discussed at the interdisciplinary academic exchange jointly organized by the Faculty of Linguistics, the Faculty of Oriental Studies, and the Sejong Korean Language Center Hanoi (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-USSH) this morning, June 17, 2025.
This exchange session is the opening activity in a series of professional activities organized in collaboration with the Faculty of Linguistics and the Faculty of Oriental Studies, aiming to promote interdisciplinary academic exchange; update on the best practices in teaching Vietnamese worldwide; and expand the research and training space for faculty and students of VNU-USSH. The event was attended by representatives from the university leadership, the heads of the organizing faculties, and experts, scientists, faculty, and students from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and Columbia University (USA).
Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Binh - Head of the Department of Linguistics, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, opened the academic exchange session.
Speaking at the event, Professor Hoang Anh Tuan, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, emphasized: Vietnamese is an indispensable part of the nation's cultural heritage, but it is also a tool for Vietnam to integrate deeply and proactively into the international community. In this context, research, training, and promotion of Vietnamese as a foreign language have become strategic tasks, requiring close collaboration between domestic and international educational institutions.
The specialized professional activities clearly demonstrate the interdisciplinary research and internationalization orientation of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi. Through these activities, the in-depth professional knowledge and practical experience of lecturers and scientists have been disseminated to the community with the spirit of science serving society.

During the professional exchange session, speakers from Columbia University (USA) and the Department of Oriental Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, shared in-depth scientific information on the research and training of the Vietnamese language in several countries such as the United States, Japan, and South Korea. Accordingly, Vietnamese is among the top 5 most spoken languages ​​in the United States; however, Vietnamese language training in these countries has not yet fully exploited its potential and inherent appeal.
In countries like South Korea and Japan, Vietnamese is taught in many high schools and prestigious universities, and is one of the languages ​​chosen to be studied alongside English. The growing demand for learning Vietnamese in many countries, especially among Vietnamese expatriates abroad, has created a vast space for Vietnamese language training and research worldwide.
Ms. Nguyen Phuong Chung, M.Sc. - Director of the Vietnamese Language Program, Columbia University, USA, and former student of the Linguistics Department, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, shared her experience on maintaining Vietnamese language teaching at universities in the United States.
Dr. Nguyen Phuong Thuy - Department of Japanese Studies, Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, discussed the topic "Vietnamese Language Training in Japan: Current Situation and Existing Challenges".
Dr. Nguyen Thuy Giang - Department of Korean Studies, Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, discusses the situation of Vietnamese language teaching in South Korea.
Previously, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi, and Columbia University (USA) signed a cooperation agreement in many fields, including areas of strength for both universities: research and training in linguistics, especially research and teaching of the Vietnamese language.
